     Statement of Faculty Senate Action:
     

     FWDC 4: University Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee
     
     NEW COMMITTEE PROPOSAL:
     
  10.4.9    University Scholarship and Financial Aid
            Committee
     
     Purpose:   The committee oversees all UNCA institutional and
     foundation scholarship awards.  The committee:
 
      Determines final awards for University Laurels, the
                 university merit scholarships, based on faculty and
                 student input from campus interviews and folder
                 evaluations.
       Approves recommendations of awards for university need-merit 
		and/or other special scholarships.       
       Approves recommendations of departmental scholarship
                awards.
       Determines policies and procedures for the awarding of
                 university scholarships.
       Reviews and makes recommendations for Financial Aid
                 policies and procedures.
     
     Membership:  Assist. VC for Enrollment Management, Director of
     Admissions, Director of Financial Aid, Director of the Honors
     Program, Director of Undergraduate Research, one student
     (appointed by VCAA), and one faculty (appointed by VCAA).
     
     Recommendations to:  Assist. VC for Enrollment Management 
     
     Rationale:  There is not a University committee with oversight
     responsibility of scholarships.  A financial aid advisory committee
     existed years ago, but ceased to exist.  A scholarship committee
     has existed (just not on paper) with membership similar to the
     listing above.  It seems prudent and advisable that we have
     practice match policy.
