THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1298S Date of Senate Approval 1/22/98 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC 11: Modification of French 300 Course Effective Date: Fall 1998 Delete: from description for FREN 300 on page 121 of current Catalog: Fall and Spring. Add: after "Laboratory exercises, ... work.": Course may be repeated once for credit. Add: after "Prerequisite ... equivalent.": Every year. Impact Statement: FREN 300 is required for French majors and minors; this requirement will not change. Offering the course every year allows more flexibility with electives. a. Concurrences: No other departments or programs will be affected by the proposed changes. b. Resource statement: These changes will not affect staffing needs or other course offerings other than to allow more flexibility in scheduling course offerings. Rationale: a. Change from Fall and Spring to every year: A look at the current catalog shows that all other courses in French at the 300 level or above are offered once yearly, or less frequently. Offering FREN 300 every semester limits flexibility in course offerings given the current staffing in French. Changing the catalog statement does not preclude our occasionally offering this course twice a year, provided there is adequate staffing and demand. Since this course is open to any student who has completed FREN 220 or the equivalent, FREN 300 may be taken as early as the freshman or sophomore year. Majors and minors should have no difficulty scheduling the course. b. Course may be repeated once for credit. Oral skills must be constantly practiced to be maintained. Since some of our majors and minors do not study abroad, there is an even greater need to expose them to authentic speech and writing. Moreover, a new oral proficiency requirement was created in 1996 for French majors, in keeping with the general SACS guidelines (see p. 120 of the current catalog, section IV). To assist students in acquiring the necessary oral skills, we would like to be able to recommend in some cases that a student take the course twice for credit. Although the core methodology and processes are constant in FREN 300, the materials used are continuously updated, so that course content is constantly renewed.
