Delete on page 123 the entire second paragraph that begins "The study of German..." Add in place of the deleted paragraph the following: The department encourages study abroad whenever possible, and students in the program often spend a semester or academic year in Germany. An exchange agreement between North Carolina and the German State of Baden-Wrttemberg makes study in Germany both affordable and easy to arrange. Impact Statement: N/A Rationale: The deleted statements are unconvincing. The statements added provide useful information for prospective students. Delete on page 123 under Track in German the item labeled I that begins "Required courses in the major... Add under Track in German the following: I. Required courses in the major : 27 hours including 310, 320, 350, 351, 420, 425 or 435, 485, and six elective hours at the 300 or 400 level. Impact Statement: The changes have no implications for funding or staffing. Discussion of German 350, 351 and 425, 435 follows. Rationale: The addition of 350, 351 as requirements follows from the conviction that all majors need a detailed survey of the principal stages and achievements of German civilization. The addition of 425 and 435 reflects recent experiences in the major program and is discussed further on. Delete on page 123 under Teacher Licensure in German the entire section. Add to replace the deleted section the following Students who intend to obtain teacher licensure in German should contact the appropriate advisor in the Education Department and consult the Education section of the catalog. I. Required courses in the major: 310, 320, 340, 350, 351, 420, 425 or 435, 485 and 3 hours at the 300- or 400- level. II. Required courses outside the major -- see Education section of the catalog. A second area of licensure in German is also available. For specifics, see the appropriate advisor in the Department of Education. Impact Statement: No implications for funding or staffing. No increase in hours. The change is that 350 and 351 are now required. Rationale: As indicated above, the German staff has come to regard 350 and 351 as essential to either a major or minor program. Delete on page 123 under "Minor in German" the statement beginning "18 hours in courses..." Add to replace the deleted statement under "Minor in German" the following: 18 hours beyond the intermediate level including 310, 320, 350, 351, and 420, and 3 hours at the 300- or 400- level. Impact Statement: No implications for funding or staffing. Rationale: Two courses in German Civilization (350, 351) are deemed essential to a minor program. Delete on page 124 the course description for 340 - The German Language (3) Add to replace the deleted description the following A study of the phonetic system of German and the history of the language with particular reference to the phonetic system and history of the English language. Add to replace the deleted description the following Introduction to and survey of the literary, cultural, artistic, and intellectual achievements of the German-speaking peoples from their Germanic beginnings to the Age of Goethe. Prerequisite - GERM 310 or permission of instructor. Every other year. Impact Statement: No implications for staffing or funding. Rationale: The staff in German has come to regard German 350 as a key component of the major/minor program. It is perhaps analogous to the position of the Humanities sequence in the UNC-A liberal arts curriculum. Delete on page 124 the course description for 351 German Civilization II (3) Add to replace the deleted description the following: Introduction to and survey of the literary, cultural, artistic, and intellectual achievement of the German-speaking peoples from The Age of Goethe to the present.
