     APC Document 6:   Changes in Prerequisites for
                                       Atmospheric Sciences Courses
     
     
     Effective Date:   Fall 1998
     
     a.   Delete    	 on page 74 within the course
                         description for 305 the phrase
                         "Prerequisites:  ATMS 215; MATH 192;
                         PHYS222."
     
          Replace the deleted phrase with the following
     
                    Prerequisites: ATMS 214; PHYS 221;
                         Corequisite: Math 192.
     
     Impact:   None
     
     Rationale:     The change is requisites/corequisites brings
     the requirements into what are necessary for the course.
     
     
     b.   Delete    	 on page 74 within the course
                         description for 316 the reference to
                         ATMS 315
     
          Replace the deleted phrase with the following
     
                    ATMS 214
     
     Impact:   None
     
     Rationale:   This course has evolved into more of an
     operational meteorology offering. For this reason the more
     theoretical presentation of ATMS 315 is not required.

     c.   Delete    	 on page 75 in the course description for
                         ATMS 340 the phrase "Prerequisite:
                         ATMS 103"
     
          Replace the deleted phrase with the following
     
                    Prerequisites ATMS 103 or 105; MATH
                    191.
     
     Impact:   None
     
     Rationale:  The 105 introductory course was inadvertently
     left out after it was added to the departments rubric.  Since
     calculus is now being used in the course, it is essential that
     students have completes MATH 191.
     
     
     
     d.   Delete:   	 on page 75 in the course description for
                         ATMS 410 the phrase  "Prerequisite:
                         ATMS 214 or permission of instructor."
     
          Replace the deleted phrase with the following 
     
                    Corequisite: ATMS 305.
     
     Impact: None
     
     Rationale:  Many of the majors transfer to UNCA and need
     to take junior courses in their senior year.  ATMS 305 and
     410 are both offered in the fall and students taking both at
     the same time are not disadvantaged.  Those attempting
     410 without 214 do so at a disadvantage.
     
     
     
     e.   Add: on page 75 in the course description for ATMS
               420 after the phrase ATMS 405 the phrase
     
                    or permission of instructor.
     
     Impact:   None
     
     Rationale: This course is not frequently offered and it's
     clientele is small.  Those who choose to take it are generally
     of the higher cut, allowing some flexibility in the prerequisite.
     
     
     f.   Delete:   on page 76 in the course description for
                    ATMS 455 the phrase "ATMS 214."
     
          Replace the deleted phrase with the following
     
                         ATMS 305.
     
     Impact:  None
     
     Rationale:  The course, Physical Meteorology, has evolved
     to where thermodynamics, ATMS 305, is needed as
     background.  ATMS 305 is taught in the fall and 455 in the
     spring so the clientele will remain the same.
