THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 3397S Date of Senate Approval 4/10/97 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 27: Changes in Curricular Pre-Requisites in Education Effective Date: Immediately A. Page 108, following EDUCATION (EDUC) Delete: Second paragraph Rationale: The paragraph is not only unnecessary but misleading. B. Page 114, following prerequisite listing for EDUC 310 Delete: " . . . or permission of instructor. Course offered every semester." Add: Pre- or co-requisite: PSYC 317. Course offered every semester. Rationale: See "D" below. In addition, the nature of this course requires that students have some exposure to theories dealing with human development. Further, because most subsequent Education courses build upon the developmental theories covered in PSYC 317, it seems reasonable that the Psychology courses should be taken prior to or along with enrollment in EDUC 310. C. Pages 114, 115, 116: With respect to EDUC 315, 317, 332, 340, 342, 385 Add: following the word "Prerequisite," EDUC 310 Rationale: EDUC 310 has always been the prerequisite to all regular courses in the Department, as evidenced in the 1985, 1990 and 1995 reports to the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the State Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Why this has not also been evidenced in UNCA catalogues since 1994-1995 is unknown, in that such a requirement is in compliance with accrediting agency expectation that there be appropriate and orderly sequencing of professional courses. Unfortunately, the preclusion has meant that some students have registered for certain upper-level offerings only to attend class and discover the need to drop. This change should remedy that situation. D. Pages 114, 115, 116: With respect to EDUC 310, 313, 314, 315, 319, 332, 340, 342, 365, 380, 382, 383, 385 Delete: after the listing of "Prerequisites," "or permission of instructor." Rationale: There is no need for the phrase, if, indeed, the listed prerequisites are considered essential foundations for effectiveness in and of the courses. E. Page 116 (a) EDUC 380 Delete: All except the first sentence of the course description. Add: Field experience required. Course to be taken one semester prior to The Professional Semester (EDUC 455 and 490 or 496). Prerequisites: EDUC 310, 313, 314; EDUC 320 (6-9 only); PSYC 317. Course offered every semester. (b) EDUC 382 Delete: All except the first sentence of the course description. Add: Field experience required. Course to be taken one semester prior to The Professional Semester (EDUC 455, 496). Prerequisites: EDUC 310; EDUC 314 (6-9, 9-12 only); 320 (6-9 only). Pre- or co-requisites: EDUC 332 (K-6 only); EDUC 365 (6-9; 9-12 Science only). Course offered every semester. (c) EDUC 383 Delete: All except the first sentence of the course description. Add: Field experience required. Course to be taken one semester prior to The Professional Semester (EDUC 455, 496). Prerequisites: EDUC 310, 314; EDUC 320 (6-9 only). Pre- or co-requisite: EDUC 365. Course offered every Fall semester. Rationale: These changes clarify (a) which students are involved, (b) the prerequisite or co-requisite expectations from students as germane to each level and area of licensure, and, (c), allow for effectual advising and planning relative to timely program completion by students. F. Page 117 (a) EDUC 490 Delete: Course description and other information in the section. Add: During student teaching involvement, licensure-seekers implement the design constructed in EDUC 390. Writing of the final chapters of the required paper must be delayed until the latter part of the phase-out period of student teaching, and a required presentation of the research occurs during examination week at UNCA. Prerequisites: EDUC 390 and admission to the student teaching experience. Course offered every semester. (b) EDUC 496 Delete: Course description and other information in the section. Add: During student teaching involvement, licensure-seekers implement the design constructed in EDUC 396. Writing of the final chapters of the required paper must be delayed until the latter part of the phase-out period of student teaching, and a required presentation of the research occurs during examination week at UNCA. Prerequisites: EDUC 396 and admission to the student teaching experience. Course offered every semester. Rationale: These changes are intended to clarify course content requirements as well as the temporal conditions as necessitated through the mandates of accrediting agencies. GENERAL IMPACT: With regard to all requested changes, none will require additional resources and there should be the opportunity for more effectual advising of students. Editorial Changes A. Page 116 Delete: EDUC 365 Educational Assessment, K-12 (3) Add: EDUC 365 Educational Assessment, 6-12 (3) Rationale: As evidenced in the description, this course is for those seeking middle and/or high school licensure in science and /or mathematics. It is not germane to K-6 (elementary school) licensure.
