THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2897S Date of Senate Approval 3/20/97 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 24: Change in Management and Accountancy Courses, Major Requirements and Concentrations Effective Date: Fall 1997 SECTION I: Course Additions and Deletions #1 Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 158 the paragraph entitled: "306 Comparative Management: A Micro Perspective(3)" delete the course description and title. Impact: No effect on other departments and a reduction in departmental resources. Rationale: This course is no longer being offered due to inadequate demand. The course listing needs to be removed from the catalog. #2 Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 159 under the paragraph entitled: "354 Sales Management (3)" delete the course description and title. Add: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 159 replace the paragraph entitled: "354 Sales Management (3)" with the following course title and description: 357 Promotion Management (3) An examination of the promotional process, focusing on how the five aspects of the promotional mix (advertising, direct marketing, sales promotion, publicity and public relations, and personal selling) are interrelated, and their effects on both consumers and businesses. Prerequisite: MGMT 350. Course offered every spring semester. Impact: No effect on other departments or departmental resources. Rationale: Offering Promotion Management will provide students with a broader and more useful perspective of the whole promotional process, rather than with just that of a single element of the promotional mix (personal selling/sales management). MGMT 354 and MGMT 357 are sufficiently different so that students may receive credit for both MGMT 354 and MGMT 357; therefore, MGMT 357 cannot be used to replace an "F" in MGMT 354. #3 Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 160 under the paragraph entitled: "356 Retailing Management (3)" delete the course description and title. Add: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 160 replace the paragraph entitled: "356 Retailing Management(3)" with the following course title and description: 358 Services Marketing (3) This course focuses on the differences inherent in the marketing of services versus goods. Characteristics unique to services and their effect on the marketing mix are discussed. Provides an overview of services marketing. Prerequisite: MGMT 350. Course offered every fall semester. Impact: No effect on other departments or departmental resources. Rationale: Offering Services Marketing will provide students with a broader and more useful perspective of the whole realm of services marketing, rather than with just that of a single element of the services market (retailing management). MGMT 356 and MGMT 358 are sufficiently different so that students may receive credit for both MGMT 356 and MGMT 358; therefore, MGMT 358 cannot be used to replace an "F" in MGMT 356. #4 Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 162 the paragraph entitled: "491, 493, 496, 497, 498, 499 Senior Seminar (3)" delete the course description and title. Add: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 162 replace the paragraph entitled: "491, 493, 496, 497, 498, 499 Senior Seminar (3)" with the following course title and description: 491 Senior Seminar (3) Applies management and social philosophy concepts to in-depth analyses of current and future business situations. Particular emphasis is placed on research and team dynamics, as well as ethical and international business issues. Prerequisites: HUM 414, senior status, and completion of all required 300 level management courses. Pre- or co-requisite: MGMT 480. Course offered every semester. Impact: No effect on other departments and decreases the amount of departmental resources needed for this course. Rationale: Offering a specialized senior seminar for each concentration within the Management degree made it difficult to acquire adequate faculty resources and for students to schedule the appropriate specialized seminar. Offering a single generalized seminar will reduce the number of faculty needed to cover the courses, as well as make the seminar easier for students to schedule. SECTION II: Management Concentration Changes #5 Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "Financial" delete: Four of the following courses: ECON 210, 215, 301, 305, 351, 365, 406; MGMT 493 ... Add: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "Financial" add: Four of the following courses: ECON 210, 215, 301, 305, 365, 406; MGMT 491 ... Impact: No effect on other departments or departmental resources. Rationale: The deleted course is a specialized senior seminar and is no longer being offered since it has been replaced by the general senior seminar. #6 Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "Health Care" delete: MGMT 320, 321, 322 or 332, 421, 496 and a 300-400 level elective outside the department and approved by the advisor. Add: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "Health Care" add: MGMT 320, 321, 421, 425, 491 and a 300-400 level elective outside the department and approved by the advisor. Impact: No effect on other departments or departmental resources. Rationale: The deleted course (496) is a specialized senior seminar and is no longer being offered since it has been replaced by the general senior seminar (491). Also, due to the removal of the specialized senior seminar, the concentration has been altered to replace one of the courses (322 or 332) with the capstone course in the concentration (425). #7 Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "Human Resources" delete: "ECON 330; MGMT 332, 345, 497; PSYC 200 and a 300-400 level elective outside the department and approved by the advisor." Add: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "Human Resources" add: "MGMT 332, 345, 432, 491; one from MGMT 335, MGMT 435, ECON 330; and a 300-400 level elective outside the department and approved by the human resources advisor." Impact: The enrollment for ECON 330 may be slightly reduced as ECON 330 is no longer required, but is now one of three options. Enrollment in PSYC 200 may be lower as PSYC 200 is no longer a requirement of the Human Resources concentration. Rationale: The deleted course (497) is a specialized senior seminar and is no longer being offered since it has been replaced by the general senior seminar (491). Also, due to the removal of the specialized senior seminar, concentration has been altered to replace one of the courses(PSYC 200) with the capstone course in the concentration (432). #8 Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "International" delete: "ECON 314 or 350 or 351 or SOC 350 or 353; MGMT 306, 408, 498; POLS 281; ECON 314 or 350 or 351 or SOC 350 or 353; and a 300-400 level elective outside the department and approved by the advisor." Add: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "International" add: "MGMT 408, 491; ECON 250; POLS 281; select one course from ECON 314 or 350 or SOC 331 or HIST 311; and a 300-400 level elective outside the department and approved by the advisor." Impact: The addition of ECON 250 to the International concentration will increase the enrollment in ECON 250 somewhat. Also, the History Department may be affected as HIST 311 has been included as a possible choice within the concentration. Rationale: The deleted course is a specialized senior seminar (498) and is no longer being offered since it has been replaced by the general senior seminar (491). Also the concentration has been altered to make the list of courses from which the student chooses more appropriate to the concentration. #9 Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "Marketing" delete: "LANG 351 or MCOM 269 or PSYC 200; MGMT 351, 453, 499, an approved marketing elective; and a 300-400 level elective outside the department and approved by the advisor." Add: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "Marketing" add: "MGMT 351, 453, 458, 491; MGMT 357 or 358; and a 300-400 level elective outside the department and approved by the advisor." Impact: May result in a significant impact (decrease) on enrollment in LANG 351, MCOM 269, and PSYC 200. Rationale: The deleted course is a specialized senior seminar (499) and is no longer being offered since it has been replaced by the general senior seminar (491). Also, due to the removal of the specialized senior seminar, the concentration has been altered to replace one of the course selections (LANG 351 or MCOM 269 or PSYC 200) with the capstone course in the concentration (458). Furthermore, the course numbers of the marketing electives have been specified (357 or 358). #10 Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "Operations" delete: "ECON 320 or 365; LANG 351 or MCOM 269; MGMT 381 or 384 or 487, 460 and 491; and a 300-400 level elective outside the department and approved by the advisor." Add: In Catalog 1996-97, on pg. 153 the paragraph entitled: "Operations" add: "ECON 312 or 360 or 365; MGMT 381 or 384; MGMT 460, MGMT 487, and 491; and a 300-400 level elective outside the department and approved by the advisor." Impact: May be a significant decrease in enrollment in LANG 351 and MCOM 269. Rationale: MGMT 487 is now a requirement of the concentration since it is better preparation for the student's workplace experience than LANG 351 or MCOM 269.
