THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2797S Date of Senate Approval 3/20/97 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 23: Changes in Sculpture Courses in Art Effective Date: Fall 1997 Catalog Changes (Art Department): Delete: page 71, 361 Advanced Surface Design: Marbling, advanced batik, advanced painting, plaiting, coiling, piecing, layering, advanced discharged dying. Course offered every semester. Add: page 71, 345 Figurative Sculpture (3): Figurative sculpture using quick study methods with ceramic clay and plaster molds. Sculpting methods with plastiline clay and silicone mold material are also used. Prerequisites: ART 103, 240 and 340. Course offered every spring semester. Delete: page 72, 440 Sculpture V (3): Exploration of ideas in depth. Beginning preparation for senior exhibition. Sketchbook/journal. Prerequisite: ART 341. Course offered every semester. Add: page 72, 440 Advanced Sculpture Methods (3): Exploration of ideas in depth. Beginning preparation for Senior Exhibition. Written and oral defense of work required. Prerequisites: ART 103, 240, and 340. Course offered every semester. Impact Statement: The number of sculpture offerings will be reduced by one. There are many other areas that could be offered, but space and time constraints do not allow it. Students can still take independent study courses in different media and intense investigation as needed. The BFA requires a concentration of 21 hours in a specific area or areas (intermedia). A sculpture concentration would count 3 credit hours for Art 103, 3 credit hours each for Art 240, Art 340, Art 345, Art 440, and 3 credit hours for Art 490 and Art 491 (Senior Exhibition I and II). This totals 21 credit hours. If a student needs more credit hours, Art 492 (Senior Exhibition III) is available. Rationale: Sculpture courses and numbers have not been changed since 1987. The current tendency in Art education is to develop courses around content and not techniques. Technique is important to the development of the artist, but content is lacking as the offerings are now described Art 240 Introduction to Sculpture Elements would be primarily content, using the history of sculpture as the basis. A requisite of art education are the written and oral components required for graduation. Art 240 will allow for experimentation, investigating styles and developments of the 20th century. Some sculptural methods using wood construction, plaster modeling, armature building, figurative methods and welding will be used.
