THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1096F Date of Senate Approval 12/05/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 8: Catalog Changes in Environmental Science Effective Date: Fall, 1997. Delete: In Catalog 1996-97, on page 119, the following: Track in Pollution Analysis and Control 40-41 hours distributed as follows: CHEM 222, 223, 231, 232, 312, 332; and three from ENVR 321, 331, 338, 362; PHYS 131, 231. Students must take MATH 191-192 for their math requirement. Delete: Track in Energy and Waste Management Systems 38 hours distributed as follows: CHEM 222, 231; ENVR 331, 333, 354, 362; MATH 191, 192, 291; PHYS 221, 222. Add: Track in Pollution Control 35-38 hours distributed as follows: CHEM 231, 223; any three from ENVR 331, 338, 354, 362; and two from CHEM 222, 232, 332, ENVR 321; PHYS 131-231 or PHYS 221-222. Students must take MATH 191-192 for their math requirement. Impact: There should be virtually no impact on other departments from the proposed catalog changes. There may be a slight decrease in enrollment for MATH 291. Rationale: A new program track in Earth Science has been proposed and is expected soon to receive final approval. There is a strong desire not to increase (beyond the current four) the total number of program track in Environmental Studies. Having too many tracks will reduce the number of students in each track, which will have negative effects on course options and frequency of course offerings. The Pollution Analysis and Energy and Waste Management tracks have always had a great deal of overlap, both in course curriculum and in the types of careers for which they provide preparation. By merging these two tracks, we will be able to offer students greater course selection and flexibility.
