THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0496F Date of Senate Approval 11/07/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 3: Addition of ENGR 171-4, 271-4, 371-4 Special Topics in Engineering Course Effective Date: Spring 1997 Add: "171-4, 271-4, 371-4, Special Topics in Engineering (1-4) Courses not otherwise included in the catalog listing but for which there may be special needs. May be repeated for credit as often as permitted and as subject matter changes. Courses offered on demand." Impact Statement: The addition of a Special Topics option in the course catalog will increase the flexibility of the program to offer courses in addition to the established group. This would allow us to take advantage of unique live teaching opportunities or distance learning situations. No other UNCA departments will be affected. Typically, only engineering majors will be impacted, but in some instances, non-engineering students may be interested in enrolling in an ENGR Special Topics course. The applicability of the course to their UNCA curriculum will be at the discretion of the student's advisor and major department. No additional staffing or facilities are anticipated. Rationale: The inclusion of Special Topics Courses is common throughout the UNCA catalog. This would bring the Engineering offerings into a similar and consistent mode with other UNCA offerings. Coordination: Coordination with other UNCA departments and programs will be accomplished by the Director as necessary.
