THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 5896S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 55: Catalog Changes for Attempted Hours and Withdrawal Effective Date: Fall 1996 A. Define Attempted Hours Add: In Catalog 1995-96, page 35, between the entries for Academic Load and Academic Warning, the following: Attempted Hours Every course for which a student is enrolled at the end of the last day of the appropriate add-drop period receives a grading symbol and counts toward attempted hours. For a list of grading symbols, see the section on Quality Points. Impact/Rationale: There is presently no definition of attempted hours in the Catalog and this has led to some confusion, particularly as academic hours are referred to in the Catalog sections on Academic Suspension and Academic Dismissal. The present definition is consistent with existing practice and Administrative Memorandum 348 (which states tuition surcharge conditions). B. Revise Withdrawal from a Course Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 42, the following: A student may withdraw without academic penalty from a semester course up to the end of the sixth week of class. A student may withdraw without academic penalty from a Term I or Term II course up to the end of the third week of the class. A student may withdraw without academic penalty from a summer term course up to the end of the second week of the class. The student and his or her advisor must sign the request form after reviewing the studentþs record, future plans and possible effects upon graduation date, eligibility for financial aid, veteranþs benefits, and intercollegiate athletics. A symbol of W is used to indicate withdrawal from the course. The official withdrawal date is the date on which the student submits the completed Permission to Withdraw from a Course form. Withdrawal from a course after the announced deadline will result in an F grade except when extenuating circumstances dictate otherwise. Withdrawal after the deadline with the grade of W requires both the written permission of the instructor and the signature of the studentþs advisor. Approval of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management is also required. Students who are dropping all of their courses are really exiting from the University. There are special procedures for doing this. See the section on Withdrawal from the University. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: A student who wants to withdraw from a course must meet with his or her advisor and they must both sign a Permission to Withdraw from a Course form after reviewing the studentþs record, future plans and possible effects upon graduation date, eligibility for financial aid, veteranþs benefits, intercollegiate athletics, and tuition surcharge. The official withdrawal date is the date on which the student submits the completed form to the Registrar. A student may withdraw from: a semester course up to the end of the sixth week of class; a Term I or Term II course up to the end of the third week of the class; and a summer term course up to the end of the second week of the class. A student who withdraws in this way will receive a grade of W for the course. W hours count as attempted hours. A student may also withdraw from a course after the appropriate withdrawal deadline. A student who withdraws in this way will receive a grade of F except when extenuating circumstances dictate otherwise. Withdrawal after the deadline with the grade of W requires both the written permission of the instructor and the signature of the studentþs advisor. Approval of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management is also required. Students who withdraw from all of their courses are really exiting from the University. There are special procedures for doing this. See the section on Withdrawal from the University. Impact/Rationale: The use of the words þwithout academic penaltyþ in the section Withdrawal from a Course has led to unanticipated interpretive problems. It seems best to avoid these problems by eliminating the words which gave rise to them and clarifying withdrawal grading. This seemed like a good time to revise the entire entry.
