THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 5696S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 53: Catalog Changes in Environmental Studies Effective Date: Fall 1996 A. Change in Track in Pollution Analysis and Control Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 120, the following: Track in Pollution Analysis and Control 33 hours distributed as follows: any three from CHEM 211, 222, 223, 231, 232, 332; ENVR 331, 338, 339, 362; PHYS 131, 231. Students must take MATH 191-192 for their math requirement. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: Track in Pollution Analysis and Control 40-41 hours distributed as follows: CHEM 222, 223, 231, 232, 312, 332; any three from ENVR 321, 331, 338, 362; PHYS 131, 231. Students must take MATH 191-192 for their math requirement. Impact: This change should have no impact beyond resulting in slight enrollment redistributions between the four advanced ENVR courses in the track. Rationale: The merging of ENVR 339 into ENVR 321 will permit fuller enrollment to be achieved. It will enable Ecology Track students to learn more about the chemistry of aquatic systems and will enable students in the track to learn more about lake systems. APC Note: The suggested choice of three CHEM courses in the deleted entry is incorrect and should apply to the ENVR courses. Partially in consequence of that, the deleted entry actually has 40-41 hours. B. Change in Track in Energy and Waste Management Systems Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 120, the following: Track in Energy and Waste Management Systems 33 hours distributed as follows: CHEM 211, 231; ENVR 331, 333, 354, 362; MATH 291; PHYS 221, 222, 325. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: Track in Energy and Waste Management Systems 38 hours distributed as follows: CHEM 222, 231; ENVR 331, 333, 354, 362; MATH 191, 192, 291; PHYS 221, 222. Impact: This change may result in a slight reduction in PHYS 325, which is an advanced physics course offered for physics majors. Rationale: This change is being suggested to create free elective hours for all majors in this track. APC Note: The deleted entry actually has 40 hours. C. Change in Special departmental requirements Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 120, the following: III. Special departmental requirements - 29-33 hours: completion of one of the tracks outlined below. The senior demonstration of competency is satisfied by the completion of ENVR 330 and 490 with a C or better. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: III. Special departmental requirements - 25-41 hours: completion of one of the tracks outlined below. The senior demonstration of competency is satisfied by the completion of ENVR 330 and 490 with a C or better. Completion of ENVR 330 fulfills the all-university oral competency requirement. Impact: An oral competency requirement at the senior level has been a requirement of the Environmental Studies Program since its inception in 1983. All prospective majors must complete a three- hour senior seminar, which requires three major oral presentations with full development of audio-visuals, outlines, abstracts, etc. Thus, there is no impact in terms of adding a new course or new teaching load requirement for faculty, since this has been part of Gary Miller's teaching load from the beginning of the program. Rationale: This credit hour change is being suggested to create additional free elective hours for most (90%) of the majors in the program. The second change is mandated as a new all- university oral competency requirement. APC Note: The deleted Special departmental requirements actually has 28-41 hours. D. Changes in Chemistry Course Prequisites Effective Date: Fall 1996 Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 122, under 331 Principles of Air Pollution (ATMS 331) (3), the following: Prerequisites: CHEM 141 and one of the following: ATMS 103 or 105, or ENVR 130. Course offered on demand. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: Prerequisites: CHEM 132 and one of the following: ATMS 103 or 105, or ENVR 130. Course offered on demand. Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 123, under 362 Principles of Water Pollution Control and Watershed Management (4), the following: Prerequisites: ENVR 130, CHEM 141. Course offered every odd year spring semester. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: Prerequisites: ENVR 130, CHEM 132. Course offered every odd year spring semester. Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 123, under 385 Soils and Land Use (4), the following: Prerequisites: ENVR 130, CHEM 141-142, or permission of instructor. Course offered every spring semester. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: Prerequisites: ENVR 130, CHEM 111, 132, 144, or permission of instructor. Course offered every spring semester. Impact: None. Rationale: These changes reflect only our need to be consistent with the new chemistry course numbers and sequences.
