THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 5496S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 51: Catalog Changes in Health and Fitness Effective Date: Fall 1996 Add: In Catalog 1995-96, page 132, the following: 330 Peer Education and Health (3) The study of peer education concepts and programs, especially as they relate to health. Students will assess campus needs which might be met by peer education and develop appropriate programs. The Certified Peer Educator Program will be used so students who want to can become nationally certified as a Peer Educator. Topics will include health promotion and wellness, AIDS education, substance abuse education, beginning counseling skills and family systems. Prerequisites: HF 120 or permission of instructor. Course offered every semester. Impact: No additional faculty, staff, or resources will be necessary. No major, minor, department, or program will be affected. Rationale: Vicki Brunnick, MA, LPC, has taught the Peer Education course three times as a Special Topics course through the Health and Fitness Department. The course has been filled each time and has received "excellent" evaluations from students. Peer Education and Health should be made a permanent offering with an official catalog assignment in the Health and Fitness Department.
