THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 5196S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 48: Catalog Changes in Environmental Studies Effective Date: Fall 1996 A. Change in required courses in major Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 120, the following: I. Required courses in the major - 19 hours: ENVR 130, 234, 241, 330,334, 490. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: I. Required courses in the major - 19-22 hours: ENVR 130, 241, 330, 490, and select two of three from: ECON 337 (prerequisite ECON 200); ENVR 234, 334. Impact: Slight decrease in enrollment in ENVR 234, 334, and ECON 337. Some students will continue to take all three. Rationale: This change is being suggested to create three hours of free electives for all majors in the program. B. Change in required courses outside the major Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 120, the following: II. Required courses outside the major - 20-22 hours: CHEM 141, 142;ECON 200; ECON 337; two courses selected from MATH 163, 164, 167, 191, 192, STAT 185. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: II. Required courses outside the major - 11-16 hours: CHEM 132 or satisfactory score on Chemistry Placement Examination; CHEM 111, 144; two courses selected from MATH 163, 164, 167, 191, 192, STAT 185. Impact: This may result in a reduction of the frequency of offering of ECON 337, which means that instead of every semester, it will likely be taught once a year. Rationale: This change is being suggested to create three hours of free electives for all majors in the program. C. Change in Track in Ecology and Environmental Biology Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 120, Track in Ecology and Environmental Biology 29 hours distributed as follows: ENVR 332 and two other advanced electives in ENVR; BIOL 210 and/or 211, and 15 hours of advanced Biology or Environmental Biology electives from ENVR 321, 341, 350, 432, 442, 443, 444; BIOL 332, 333, 334, 335, 337, 339, 350, 351, 356. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: Track in Ecology and Environmental Biology 25 hours distributed as follows: ENVR 332 and two other advanced electives in ENVR; BIOL 210 and/or 211, and 11 hours of advanced Biology or Environmental Biology electives from ENVR 321, 341, 350, 432, 442, 443, 444; BIOL 332, 333, 334, 335, 337, 339, 350, 351, 356. Impact: This change may result in a slight reduction in the number of students wanting an advanced Biology or Environmental Biology course. This should not be a problem since these courses are always full and may have waiting lists in any given semester. Rationale: This change is being suggested to create free elective hours for all majors in this track. APC Note: The deleted Track actually has 28 hours. D. Change in Track in Natural Resource Management Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 120, the following: Track in Natural Resource Management 31 hours distributed as follows: ENVR 332 and two advanced electives in ENVR; ACCT 218, ECON 200, 201, and one elective in ECON; MGMT 220 and one elective in MGMT; POLS 352. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: Track in Natural Resource Management 33 hours distributed as follows: ENVR 332 and two advanced electives in ENVR; ACCT 201; ECON 200, 201, 337, and 345; MGMT 220 and one elective in MGMT; POLS 352. Impact: A very slight reduction in advanced ECON courses will result due to the dropping of three hours of credit. Rationale: These changes are being made in order to be consistent with the program changes identified above and to create three hours of free electives for all majors in the program. The addition of ECON 345 is to correct an oversight deletion in the current catalog. It has always been a requirement for this track. The reason 28 hours is given as the distribution requirement (even though the credits add up to 34) is because the majors in this track will select ECON 337 as an option in I and ECON 201 can be used as an all-university general education social science course. E. Change in General Environmental Studies Track Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 120, the following: General Environmental Studies Track The student, with advice from his or her academic advisor and approval of the program director, may select a course of study for preparation in career areas such as Environmental Policy, Environmental Journalism, Human Ecology, Zoo and Aquarium Management, or Environmental Geology. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: General Environmental Studies Track The student, with advice from his or her academic advisor and approval of the program director, may select a course of study for preparation in career areas such as Environmental Policy, Environmental Journalism, Earth Science, Environmental Planning, or Human Ecology. This option also requires the completion of I, II, and III above. Impact: None. Rationale: Some students assume wrongly that the creation of an individualized degree track exempts them from requirements which all Environmental majors must fulfill. F. Change in ENVR 321 Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 121, the following: 321 Limnology (BIOL 321) (4) Study of the interrelationship of physical, chemical and biological processes in fresh waters. (Includes laboratory and field work.) Prerequisite: ENVR 130, or BIOL 210 or 211. Course offered every even year fall semester. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: 321 Limnology (BIOL 321) (4) Study of the physical, biological and especially chemical processes in fresh waters. (Includes laboratory and field work.) Prerequisite: CHEM 144. Co-requisite: ENVR 241 or BIOL 105 for biology majors. Course offered every fall semester. Impact: None Rationale: To make a water-based chemistry/biology course available to a larger segment of our majors on a more regular basis. G. Change in ENVR 330 Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 121, the following: 330 Seminar on Environmental Issues (3) In-depth coverage of a selected environmental problem based on oral and written student reports. May be repeated once. Prerequisites: ENVR 130 and junior or senior standing. Course offered every semester. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: 330 Seminar on Environmental Issues (3) In-depth coverage of a selected environmental problem based on oral and written student reports. May be repeated once. Prerequisites: ENVR 130 and senior standing in an approved track. Course offered every semester. Impact: None. Rationale: This change will make it consistent with existing enrollment patterns. We only have room for senior enrollees who are declared environmental majors. H. Deletion of ENVR 339 Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 122, the following: 339 Environmental and Aquatic Chemistry (CHEM 339) (4) Study of the chemistry associated with natural environmental processes and pollution control technologies, with emphasis on aquatic systems. Prerequisites: CHEM 141, 142. Course offered every odd year fall semester. Impact: None. Rationale: This course, throughout its history, has been largely under-enrolled and Dr. Maas feels that a larger number of students will be able to access an advanced water-related course if Limnology (ENVR 321) is substituted in the overall course schedule more frequently. I. Change in ENVR 442 Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 124, the following: 442 Forest Ecology (BIOL 442) (4) Study of the principles governing forest plant/animal populations and communities and management policies and practices at the federal, state and local levels. Prerequisite: ENVR 130, BIOL 211, or permission of instructor. Course offered every third year fall semester. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: 442 Forest Ecology and Management (BIOL 442) (4) Study of the principles governing forest plant/animal populations and communities and management policies and practices at the federal, state and local levels. Prerequisite: ENVR 130, or permission of instructor. Course offered every third year fall semester. Impact/Rationale: No impact. This title change is being suggested to more adequately reflect the current content of the course. J. Change in ENVR 490 Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 124, the following: 490 Internship (3-6) A field work experience in a public agency, public interest group, or industry. Participant observation experience in under supervision of a UNCA faculty member. Required academic component will be assigned by supervising faculty. Prerequisite: junior or senior standing in one of the program tracks and permission of the program director. Three hours of internship are required for graduation. (An IP grade may be awarded at the discretion of the instructor.) Course offered every semester. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: 490 Internship (3-6) A field work experience in a public agency, public interest group or industry. Participant's experience is under the supervision of the UNCA ENVR Internship Director and on-site work cooperator. Written paper and oral seminar are required upon completion of the project. Prerequisites: junior or senior standing, declared major in one of the program tracks and permission of the ENVR Internship Director. Three hours of internship credit are required for graduation. (An IP grade may be awarded at the discretion of the Internship Director.) Internship Handbooks are available from the Director. Internships may be conducted throughout the United States or foreign countries. Course offered every semester. Impact: None. Rationale: Gary Miller has served as both Program Director and Internship Director since 1983. He will remain as Internship Director and this will clarify the change.
