THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 4696S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 43: Catalog Changes in Physics Effective Date: Fall 1996 A. Oral competency Add: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 188, the following to the end of Part III of Program in Preparation for Graduate School, the following: Oral competency is demonstrated by successful completion of the oral presentation requirements in PHYS 331 and 332. Add: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 189, the following to the end of Part III of Program in Applied Physics, the following: Oral competency is demonstrated by successful completion of the oral presentation requirements in PHYS 331 and 332. Add: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 189, the following to the end of Part III of Program in Teacher Certification in Physics, the following: Oral competency is demonstrated by successful completion of the oral presentation requirements in PHYS 331 and 332. Replace: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 191, the course description of 331/332 Experimental Physics I,II (1,2), by the following: Selected experiments with emphasis in modern physics introducing the student to experimental design and analysis of data. Students will give oral presentations of their experimental work in each course in a seminar setting where other faculty, students, and guests may attend. Co-requisite: PHYS 324. PHYS 331 offered every spring semester. PHYS 332 offered every fall semester. Impact: No impact since these changes make explicit current practice in PHYS 331 and 332. Rationale: These changes were necessitated by the Universityþs new oral competency requirement. B. Correlate change in CHEM Replace: In Catalog 1995-96, page 188, Part II of Program in Preparation for Graduate School, by the following: II. Required courses outside the major - 20-23 hours: MATH 191, 192, 291, 394; CHEM 132 or satisfactory score on Chemistry Placement Examination; CHEM 111, 144. MATH 391 and 395 are recommended. Replace: In Catalog 1995-96, page 189, Part II of Program in Applied Physics, by the following: II. Required courses outside the major - 32-35 hours: CSCI 142; MATH 191, 192, 291; CHEM 132 or satisfactory score on Chemistry Placement Examination; CHEM 111, 144; the selection of 12 or more additional semester hours of coordinated work in Computer Science, Engineering, or another area of science. The selected program of courses must be approved by the department prior to initiation in the sequence. For an engineering emphasis, the sequence ENGR 206, 208, PHYS 411 may replace PHYS 401. Replace: In Catalog 1995-96, page 189, Part II of Program in Teacher Certification in Physics, by the following: II. Required courses outside the major - 35-38 hours: ASTR 105; BIOL 105; CHEM 132 or satisfactory score on Chemistry Placement Examination; CHEM 111, 144; ENVR 105; MATH 191, 192, 291; SOC 240. (For specifics, see Education section and the appropriate advisor in the Department of Education.) Impact: Curriculum changes in Chemistry enabled a three-semester hour reduction in the required courses outside the major for each Program in Physics. Rationale: The correlate change reflects the preparation in Chemistry that Physics students ordinarily have when they enter UNCA.
