THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 4596S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 42: Catalog Changes in Music Effective Date: Fall 1996 I. Change of Course Descriptions Replace: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 182, the course description for 352 Music History and Literature from 1750-1900, by: The music of the late Baroque through the Classical, Romantic and Impressionistic periods including style analysis of appropriate literature. Presentations in this course will prepare students for demonstrating oral competency. Prerequisite: MUSC 252 or permission of instructor. Course offered every third semester. Replace: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 183, the course description for 353 Music History and Literature from 1900, by: Survey and analysis of 20th century developments with emphasis on Stravinsky, Bartok, the Schoenberg School, atonality, electronic and experimental music. Presentations in this course will prepare students for demonstrating oral competency. Prerequisite: MUSC 352 or permission of instructor. Course offered every third semester. Impact: Since oral presentations are and have been integral parts of 352 and 353, there should be little or no impact on students. Rationale: These changes, which formalize existing practice in these classes, show that students are given meaningful opportunities to develop their ability to make oral presentations. II. Oral Competency Add: In Catalog 1995-96, page 178, under Track in General Music (BA), at the end of the entry for III. Other departmental requirements, the following: Oral competency will be examined by a faculty committee one week after the written senior competency in music theory and history. Add: In Catalog 1995-96, page 179, under Track in Jazz Studies (BA), at the end of the entry for III. Other departmental requirements, the following: Oral competency will be examined by a faculty committee one week after the written senior competency in music theory and history. Add: In Catalog 1995-96, page 179, under Track in Recording Arts (BS), at the end of the entry for III. Other departmental requirements, the following: Oral competency will be examined by a faculty committee one week after the written senior competency in music theory and history. Impact: As the development of oral communication skills is an integral component of many music courses, this change should have little impact on music majors and no impact on other majors. Rationale: These changes were necessitated by the Oral Competency requirements passed earlier this academic year by the Faculty Senate.
