THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 4296S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 39: Catalog Changes in Computer Science Effective Date: Fall 1996 I. Add a new course, CSCI 450 Add: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 98, the following: 450 Research in Computer Science (3) Instruction in techniques of research. Each student will choose an individual project and be guided through the execution of the research and preparation of a paper and presentation. Prerequisite: junior or senior level standing in Computer Science. Course offered every fall semester and other times on demand. Additional: Allow the course to be graded as an "IP" (in progress). Impact: This course will be included in the list of courses in which computer science majors select "9 Additional hours in CSCI at the 300 level or above." No Additional staff will be needed. Rationale: "Research in CSCI" has been taught as a "special topic" for three semesters. Because of its success, we want to continue making research opportunities available to our students. The "IP" status will allow a students to work on a research project for more than one semester. II. Change the name and description of CSCI 448 Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 98, the entry for CSCI 448. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: 448 Systems Development Management (3) Study of the management issues in the system development process. Current topics of concern to information systems managers will be covered through guest lectures from industry, journal readings, research, and class lecture and discussions. Prerequisite: senior level standing in Computer Science. Course offered every spring semester. Impact: No impact. Rationale: The purpose of the course is to give students an appreciation for the many issues involved in the management of technology and people in the system development process. This name change is a better reflection of the coursežs purpose. This description better reflects the purpose of the course, and the way it has been taught in recent years. III. Require CSCI 462 for the major and change its grading Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 99, from the description of CSCI 462, the following: (Grading: S/U) Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, pages 95, under Program in Computer Systems, the entire entry for I. Required courses in the major. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: I. Required courses in the major - 37 hours, including: CSCI 201, 202, 254, 320, 331, 333, 343, 346, 431, and 462; 9 additional hours in CSCI at the 300 level or above. Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, page 95-96, under Program in Information Systems, the entire entry for I. Required courses in the major. Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: I. Required courses in the major - 37 hours, including: CSCI 201, 202, 241, 254, 342, 343, 351, 446, 448, and 462; 9 additional hours in CSCI at the 300 level or above. Impact: Students will now receive a grade rather than an "S" or "U." This will add one hour to the requirements for the major. Rationale: All computer science students are required to do a senior project to demonstrate competency in computer science. During the past years, CSCI 462 has been an option for students; this change will now require each student to enroll in this course while working on a project. Since almost all CSCI students already enroll for credit, this change will not increase the number of major hours taken for credit by most CSCI students. We would like to use a better evaluation method for this course. Each student will now be evaluated by his/her senior project advisor and by all faculty members at his/her project presentation. The final letter grade will be generated, by the instructor of this course, from these evaluations. IV. Change in ACCT correlate Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 96, under II. Required courses outside the major, the following: ACCT 218 Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: ACCT 201 Impact: This reduces the number of required hours in the "Program in Information Systems" track by one credit hour. Rationale: The Management Department has changed their introductory Accounting courses. They no longer offer ACCT 218. V. Reduction in correlate hours for Information Systems Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 96, under II. Required courses outside the major, the following: 27 hours: Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: 20 hours: Impact/Rationale: The 27 hours previously listed for required courses outside the major in the program in Information Systems was incorrect. VI. Oral Competency Add: In Catalog 1995-96, page 95, under Program in Computer Systems, at the end of entry III. Other departmental requirements, the following: Oral competency is demonstrated by successful completion of the oral presentation requirements in CSCI 462. Add: In Catalog 1995-96, page 96, under Program in Information Systems, at the end of entry III. Other departmental requirements, the following: Oral competency is demonstrated by successful completion of the oral presentation requirements in CSCI 462. Impact: There should be little impact as oral presentation of onežs work is a necessary part of the development of a senior project and the transmission of its results. Rationale: The explicit statement of an oral competency requirement was necessitated by the Faculty Senate in Fall 1995.
