Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

         APC Document 37: Catalog Changes in Philosophy

Effective Date: Fall 1996

Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 185, the entire entry for III.
Other departmental requirements.

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

III.  Other departmental requirements - A demonstration of
competence: senior comprehensive exam.  Demonstration of oral
competence: completion of PHIL 402."

Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 188, the entire entry for 402
Senior Research Thesis (3).

Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following:

402  Senior Research Thesis (3)
     Completion of a research project resulting in a bachelor's
     thesis in the context of a seminar in which the student's
     ideas, drafts, and thesis are questioned and defended.  This
     also fulfills the oral competence requirement.  (IP grades are
     approved for this course.)  Course offered every fall
     semester.

Impact: Change will reduce other upper level courses by one, since
they are now done totally independently.

Rationale: These changes are necessitated by UNCA's new oral
competence requirement.
