THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 3796S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 34: Catalog Changes in Atmospheric Sciences Effective Date: Fall 1996 I. Change of Course Descriptions Replace: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 79, the course description for ATMS 410 Synoptic Meteorology I, by: A synthesis of the mathematical and analytical aspects of meteorology designed to explain fundamental weather processes and systems; practical application of the diagnostic and predictive equations through the use of weather maps; topics include upper- level systems and jet streams, and surface pressure systems. Presentations in this course will prepare students for demonstrating oral competency in the senior comprehensive examination. Prerequisite: ATMS 310 or permission of instructor. Course offered every fall semester. Replace: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 79, the course description for ATMS 411 Synoptic Meteorology II (4), by: A continuation of ATMS 410; topics include frontal systems, mid- latitude convective systems, tropical meteorology, numerical weather prediction and oral competency. Prerequisite: ATMS 410. Course offered every spring semester. Impact: These courses are for Atmospheric Sciences majors only, therefore there is no impact outside the department. Rationale: These changes formalize the evolvement of these two courses. II. Oral Competency Add: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 77, the following to the end of Part III of Track in Climatology and to the end of Part III of Track in Weather Forecasting: Oral competency will be demonstrated in a presentation as part of the senior comprehensive examination. Formal preparation for this will be in ATMS 410 and 411. Impact: This requirement has been in place for several years. The above statement only formalizes this.
