THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 3696S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 33: Catalog Changes in General Education and Health and Fitness Effective Date: Fall 1996 Proposal: That students completing HF 155, Men's Health (description below), be said to have fulfilled the one-hour HF 120 (The Physical Self) General Lecture Education Requirement. Add: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 131, the following: 155 Men's Health (3) The study of how men can understand, gain control over, and take responsibility for their bodies and their health. Course offered every semester. Delete: In Catalog 1995-96, on page 51, under Health and Wellness, the following: One course from HF 120 (1) or HF 154 (3) Add: In place of the deleted entry, the following: One course from HF 120 (1), HF 154 (3), or HF 155 (3) Impact: No additional faculty, staff, or resources will be necessary. No major, minor, department, or program will be affected. The course provides students with an additional option for the Health and Fitness General Education Lecture Requirement. Rationale: The three credit-hour Men's Health course presents all the health information that is required in the one-hour HF 120 course. It is essential that the students in Men's Health first understand how to apply the concepts presented in HF 120 to their own lives before they can incorporate adequately the more complex ethical, moral, legal, and medical issues discussed in the three- hour course. The multi-disciplinary nature of Men's Health makes it an excellent alternative for students to fulfill the HF 120 General Education Lecture Requirement.
