Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

                    APC Document 30:  Biology Prerequisites


Effective Date: Fall, 1996

1)    Regarding course description for 339 Microbiology

Delete:     Prerequisites... 142.

Add:        Prerequisites: BIOL 105 and CHEM 132.

Impact Statement:       Minimal.

Rationale:  This minimal change will insure that students have
adequate preparation for the course, especially in Biology.


2)    Regarding course description for 351 Plant Identification (p.
      84)

Add:        Prerequisites BIOL 105, 211, or permission of Instructor.

Impact Statement:  Addition of listed prerequisites reflects
current (and past) practice for this 300-level course, and will
have no significant impact.

Rationale:  Lack of listed prerequisites was a mistake.  Biol 211
(Plant Biology) will insure that students are adequately prepared
for this course.


3)    Regarding course description for 443 Genetics (p. 85)

Delete:     Prerequisites... 231.

Add:        Prerequisites: BIOL 105; CHEM 111, 144.  CHEM 231 is
            recommended.

Impact:     Minimal; reduces prerequisites.

Rationale:  Completion of CHEM 231 isn't necessary for successful
completion of BIOL 443.



4) Regarding Biology Minor (p. 81)

Delete:       ...221 ...

Impact:       Minimal

Rationale:  BIOL 221 is neither listed in the catalog nor taught
anymore.
