THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1996S Date of Senate Approval 1/18/96 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC 17: Catalog changes in Literature and Language EFFECTIVE DATE: August, 1996 ADD: p 145, following Lang 365 Playwriting Workshop, the following: LANG 366 Creative Non-Fiction Workshop A workshop in the writing of creative non-fiction essays. Through the use of immersion reporting, students will learn to accurately portray a subject through narrative development, scenic construction, point of view, symbolic representation, voice, dialogue, and descriptive detail. Does not fulfill general ARTS lab requirement. Course offered on demand. IMPACT STATEMENT: The addition of this course will not require new faculty. Creative non-fiction is already being taught as a unit in many sections of LANG 260, Introduction to Creative Writing. Our entire creative writing faculty--many of whom publish original works of creative non-fiction, and all of whom teach 260--is qualified and prepared to teach a course devoted to the genre. RATIONALE: Over the last five to ten years, creative non-fiction has emerged as one of the most popular genres of serious writing. Consequently, creative writing programs around the U.S. have begun offering degrees with a concentration in the genre. Besides the fact that many students who have completed LANG 260 have requested workshops in creative non-fiction, we believe that to prepare our students properly for lives as writers (which for many includes pursuit of advanced degrees in creative writing) we must offer them instruction in this important genre.
