Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

                         APC 14: Oral Competency -  Art Department 

Catalog Changes:

Delete:  On page 69, sections d and e under Bachelor of Fine Arts,
which read:
       
       d)  Comprehensives - B.F.A. candidates must pass the senior
              comprehensive exam given approximately four weeks 
              before the end of each semester.
       e)  Exhibition - Prior to graduation, students must present a
              one-person exhibition of their concentration work. (See
              Guide for exhibition requirements.)

Add:  In place of the deleted sections:

       d)  Exhibition - Prior to graduation, students must present 
              a one-person exhibition of their concentration work. 
              (See B.A., B.F.A. Guide for exhibition requirements.)
       e)  Other departmental requirements - Each degree candidate 
              is required to pass the senior comprehensive exam which
              is given each semester.  In addition, each degree
              candidate is expected to demonstrate oral competency in
              all art history and theory courses as part of the senior
              competency exit requirement.

Delete:  On page 69, section III under Bachelor of Arts, which
reads:

       III.  Other departmental requirements -  The senior

       An oral presentation will be required.


Add:  On page 75 to course description for Art 490, 491 and 492
after the third sentence:

       Oral defense of work presented will be required on a weekly
basis.


Impact Statement:

In the past oral presentation in art history courses was routine. 
As the number of students in courses increased the time required
for these presentations demanded so much time that significant
content material was being negated.  Beginning next semester we
will be adding one hour to art history courses beginning with the
last half of the semester.  During this time students will make
oral presentations on topics relative to the material they are
covering or based on research papers.  Since every art major must
take 12-15 hours of art history this will ensure that all art
students have made at least four oral presentations prior to or
during their senior year.

In the senior year B.F.A. candidates must take six hours of Senior
Exhibitions taken from Art 490, 491, 492.  Students in these
courses defend their theories and concepts orally on a weekly
basis.

Rationale:

These changes are necessitated by APC Document Number 1:  Oral
Competency Requirement.
