Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

  APC DOCUMENT 10:  Catalog Changes in Literature and Language



EFFECTIVE DATE:  August, 1996
     

DELETE:   p. 144, top of page, all of Part IV after the words,
          "Other departmental requirements"

ADD:      p. 144, part IV after "Other departmental requirements"
          the following

          A two-part demonstration of competency in the
          discipline, including a written examination
          and Senior Thesis; an additional
          demonstration of oral competency is required
          in Literature 491.


IMPACT STATEMENT:  The addition of a demonstration of oral
competency makes official what the department is already doing as
part of Language 491, Senior Seminar.  The only departmental
change will be to ensure that specified courses leading up to the
Senior Seminar require practice, guidance and assessment in oral
competency.  This is already done by many instructors, but has
not been required policy.  The department will now officially
designate which courses must contain such opportunities, and
syllabuses will include an appropriate, departmentally approved
statement.

RATIONALE:  This request reflects a new university-wide
requirement.  The department has no objections if APC wishes to
make editorial changes to ensure that wording of the oral
competency requirement conforms to university policy.
