THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0995F Date of Senate Approval 12/7/95 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 7: Catalog Changes in Political Science Effective Date: Fall, 1996 Change A: replace on p. 192, the introductory paragraph immediately after the listing of faculty members with the following. [The highlighted words indicate the changes only. They are not to be highlighted in the catalog.] The Political Science department offers diverse and flexible programs designed to help students prepare for meaningful careers in government and international public service, law, journalism, teaching, and other related areas. In the liberal arts tradition, programs and courses are fashioned to help students develop the skills and background necessary to interpret the political world and understand how politics shapes contemporary life. The department's goals are to help students improve their capacity to creatively ask and systematically answer questions and their skills at communicating their knowledge and insights in both written and oral fashion. Students are encouraged to work closely with their advisors to plan their study and to sample widely from a variety of course offerings. Students must also participate in either community service or research activities appropriate to their career goals and interests. Change B: Replace the current description of POLS 460 with the following: 460 Senior Colloquium (1) Students and faculty formally present and discuss their research projects and field experiences. Students are required to orally demonstrate their mastery of their project and the significance and implications of their work. Prerequisite POLS 400, 490 or ECON 490. Corequisite POLS 450. (Students enrolled in the Political Economy Program are not bound by the corequisite). Course offered every spring semester. Change C: Replace Part III under the heading "General Program" with the following: III. Senior Demonstration of Competency met by satisfactory completion of POLS 400, 450, and 460. (Oral competency satisfied by POLS 460.) Change D: Replace Part III under the heading "Research Program" with the following: III. Senior Demonstration of Competency met by satisfactory completion of POLS 450, 460, and 490. (Oral competency satisfied by POLS 460.) Change E: change, under the heading "Program in Political Economy", Parts I and III a. In Part I, line 1 change "39-40 hours" to "40-41 Hours" b. In part I, line 2 insert in the listing of required courses in Political Science after "359", the number "460". c. In part III, line 2 insert after the word "completing" the phrase "POLS 460 (satisfies oral competency) and" The entire proposed catalog copy mandated by change E would read as follows. The changes are highlighted. Program in Political Economy I. Required courses in the major--40-41 hours distributed as follows: ECON 200, 201, 310, 320 or 215, 341, 365; POLS 220, 347, 350, 351, 359, 460 and one course from 321, 323, or 326; ECON 490 or POLS 490. II. (no changes from current copy) III. Other departmental requirements--Senior demonstration of competency, met by successfully completing POLS 460 (satisfies oral competency) and either ECON 490 or POLS 490. Impact Statement These changes are made solely to satisfy the request contained in the 21 September 1995 memorandum distributed by the APC chair. The proposed changes merely make explicit what the department already does. Thus, we anticipate no impact other than those outlined in the proposals we submitted in 1994-1995 which instituted the new programs and created POLS 460. Expanding the requirement to include the Political Economy Program will probably mean only one to two additional students registered in the course per year. The identical description of the Political Economy Program appears on p. 105 under the Economics Department's heading. We requested the Department's concurrence with this change (see attached statement from Dr. Browning), but note that the proposal does not alter the requirements for students who choose to major in Political Economy within the Economics Department. The Economics Department may meet its oral competency in a different fashion. Rationale The changes simply bring the department's catalog copy into line with what APC is requesting.
