THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0895F Date of Senate Approval 12/7/95 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 6: Catalog Changes in Literature and Language EFFECTIVE DATE: August, 1996 ADD: p. 147, after the final course description of Language 497: 171-3, 271-3, 371-3, 471-3 Special Topics in Language (1-3) IMPACT STATEMENT: None RATIONALE: Although course offerings in Freshman Writing and Creative Writing have remained fairly stable for the last ten years, we have reached a point where we would like to offer, from time to time, special topic courses in both categories. For example, for Spring Semester 1996, we had the opportunity of offering for our creative writing students a special course in "Screenwriting" by a professional who has made a living in television and movies for 18 years in Hollywood. But with no Special Topics number available to us, we found we had no choice but to offer the course as "Literature 373," which, of course, makes no sense. Faculty in the Freshman Writing program have also discussed offering advanced writing courses such as "Writing in the Sciences," or "The Familiar Essay," etc. Adding special topics numbers will give us much greater flexibility for the future.
