THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0795F Date of Senate Approval 12/7/95 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC DOCUMENT 5: Catalog Changes in Literature and Language EFFECTIVE DATE: August, 1996 ADD: p. 147, after the description of Lang 497 Senior Paper in Creative Writing (3), add the following parenthetical notation: (An IP grade may be awarded at the discretion of the instructor.) IMPACT STATEMENT: None RATIONALE: The creative writing process does not necessarily fit neatly into a 15 week semester. Students working on a collection of short stories or poems, a novel, or a full length play, are sometimes unable to complete their projects in the time allotted. Novel manuscripts, for example, often run to 400 typed pages. And although a collection of twenty or thirty poems may require only twenty or thirty corresponding pages, the detailed revision of a single poem, word by word, line by line, may take weeks to accomplish. Sometimes the work can be completed only by setting a poem aside for long periods of time and gestation, then returning to it with fresh perspective. In the past, to accommodate this unpredictable and often lengthy process, we've found it necessary to create fake illnesses in order to request "incompletes." An "In Progress" grade would allow us to provide an honest grade to those students who are sincerely working hard, but who have not yet completed the necessary work in a single semester.
