THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0695F Date of Senate Approval 12/7/95 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC DOCUMENT 4: Catalog Changes in Literature and Language EFFECTIVE DATE: August, 1996 DELETE: p. 144, under "Program in Creative Writing," all of Part IV after the words, "Other departmental requirements" ADD: p. 144, part IV after "Other departmental requirements" the following A two-part demonstration of competency in the discipline, including a written examination and a Senior Creative Writing Project; an additional demonstration of oral competency will be fulfilled by a required public reading of creative work in the senior year. IMPACT STATEMENT: The Creative Writing Program began a required public reading of student work last year. The new oral competency requirement merely makes it official. Most creative writing instructors already require students to read their work aloud in workshops where other students and the instructor provide a critique. We will now incorporate this as a requirement, along with more formal faculty assessment and guidance. By the time the student reaches the senior performance requirement, he or she should be fully prepared. RATIONALE: This request reflects a new university-wide requirement. The department has no objections if APC wishes to make editorial changes to insure that wording of the oral competency requirement conforms to university policy.
