THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0295F Date of Senate Approval 9/14/95 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document Number 2: Oral Competency in the Major Effective Date: Fall 1996 Policy: Each major department will, under its Other/Special Departmental Requirements section of its major description in the Catalog, include a statement indicating how its oral competency requirement will be satisfied. Impact Statement: Although the precise impact of this proposal will depend upon the approach adopted by each major, it is thought that most major departments will choose an approach to oral performance enhancement and assessment in the context of their current courses. Alternative approaches would include, but would not be limited to, incorporating oral competency: (1) in an existing Senior Demonstration of Competency course; (2) in an alternative required course in the major; or (3) in a course outside the major department. Since this proposal is viewed as a refinement of existing practice across the University, no supporting memoranda were sought. For the same reason, the proposed change is unlikely to affect staffing or future course offerings. Rationale: This proposal is necessitated by APC Document Number 1: Oral Competency Requirement. It ensures that oral competency requirements are presented uniformly throughout the Catalog.
