THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2395S Date of Senate Approval 3/9/95 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #24: Deletion of Course MCOM 190 Effective Date: Fall Semester, 1995 Delete the course MCOM 190 Mass Media and Society Impact Statement: 1 - To our knowledge this change will impact no other departments. 2 - By cutting this course, which we have offered every semester, the department will be able to staff two more courses a year with full-time faculty instead of adjuncts. Rationale: A consultant who visited the Department of Mass Communication last fall recommended that we cut the number of hours in the major thus creating more time for students to take electives outside the department. With the creation of two general education courses MCOM 101 and 102, we are finding many of our majors taking one or both of these courses plus the required MCOM 190. The result is that our majors are spending far too much time working at the Freshman level. Under "Declaration of Major" (bottom of p. 154): Delete: A major in Mass Communication may be formally declared by students who have completed LANG 102 and either LR 101 or LR 102, and who also have completed, with a grade of C or better, each of the following courses: MCOM 190, 201 and 205. Add: A student may formally declare a major in Mass Communication after having completed LANG 102, and either LR 101 or LR 102, and after having completed MCOM 201 with a grade of C or better. Impact Statement: 1 - To our knowledge this change will impact no other departments. 2 - These changes will have no impact on staffing. Rationale: The current policy for declaring the major has caused significant hardship for many of our majors, particularly transfer students. Many students do not complete all of the requirements under the current policy until mid-junior year and occasionally into their senior year. Students receiving some types of financial aid, those receiving Veterans Administration benefits, and varsity athletes seeking to maintain eligibility all must declare a major at the beginning of their junior year, yet they often have not completed the declaration requirements by this time. The following changes grow out of the elimination of MCOM 190, Mass Media and Society. Delete: Required courses in the major - 35 hours as follows: MCOM 190, 201, 205, 301, 303, 390, 490, 492, 494; plus 6 hours elected from odd-numbered Mass Communication courses and 6 hours elected from even-numbered Mass Communication courses at the 300 or 400 level. (MCOM 451 cannot be used to fulfill this requirement.) Add: Required courses in the major - 32 hours as follows: MCOM 201, 205, 301, 303, 390, 490, 492, 494; plus 6 hours elected from odd-numbered Mass Communications course and 6 hours elected from even-numbered Mass Communication courses at the 300 or 400 level. (MCOM 451 cannot be used to fulfill this requirement.) Under Mass Communication Minor: Delete: 19 hours distributed as follows: MCOM 190, 201 or 205, 301 or 303, six hours elected from even-numbered 300- and 400-level courses, and six hours from odd-numbered 300- and 400- level courses. (MCOM 451 cannot be used to satisfy this requirement.) Add: 19 hours distributed as follows: MCOM 201 or 205; 301 or 303; 390, 490 or 492; six hours elected from even-numbered 300- and 400-level courses and six hours from odd-numbered 300- and 400- level courses. (MCOM 451 cannot be used to satisfy this requirement.) Delete: "and MCOM 190" from MCOM 201 Newswriting. Delete: "MCOM 190" from MCOM 205 Basic Video Production. Add: "MCOM 201" as prerequisite to MCOM 205 Basic Video Production. Impact Statement: 1 - To our knowledge these changes will impact no other departments. 2 - These changes will have no impact on staffing. Rationale: The deletion of MCOM 190 creates the necessity for these other changes. Delete: "MCOM 205" from MCOM 325 Opinion Writing. Add: "MCOM 201" to MCOM 325 Opinion Writing. Rationale: This is an editorial correction of an error in the catalog. The catalog now states Video Production as a requirement for this newspaper writing class.
