THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2195S Date of Senate Approval 3/9/95 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Statement of Faculty Senate Action: THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE M E M O R A N D U M 9 February 1995 To: Faculty Senate From: Larry Wilson Subject: Course Auditors Following the endorsement of the Academic Policies Committee, I submit the following proposal to change our description of course auditors. CURRENT CATALOG STATEMENT ON AUDITS (page 40,41) Students must request "audit" status for individual courses at the time of registration. Auditing students do not receive grades or credit, and instructors decide on the extent to which they may participate in class beyond their presence in the classroom. Students who wish to audit specific courses must pay the regular fees at the time of registration. Students who are registered for credit may change their status to audit up until the announced deadline for late registration. REVISED STATEMENT (catalog copy) Students electing to "audit" a course may do so by registering for the specific course on a CR/NC (credit non- completion) basis and by paying the regular tuition and fees for the course. Students who are enrolled on a full-time status may audit for no additional charge. Satisfactory completion of the course work associated with the audit as defined by the instructor shall result in the awarding of non-graduation credit (CR) for the course. Failure to satisfactorily complete the audit course work shall result in a Non-Completion (NC) grade by the instructor. Students may register for CR/NC status on a space available basis. Students may change their status to regular credit until the announced deadline for late registration (end of add/drop period). RATIONALE Currently auditors pay regular tuition and fees associated with the audited course but produce no FTE credit for UNCA. Changing the audit status to CR/NC will allow us to count the enrollment of these students. Further, students often register for an audit to enrich the appearance of their transcripts and then attend the course on an infrequent basis. Introduction of the CR/NC category will appropriately acknowledge completion of audit requirements as set by the instructor. Failure to complete the audit requirements will result in expunging of the student's record for the course. IMPACT Annually auditors register for about 15 FTE in course work. Even though these students pay regular tuition and fees, they generate no FTE credits for us. Change of status to CR/NC will allow these credits to be counted toward our enrollment total.
