THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1895S Date of Senate Approval 3/9/95 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC #16: Catalog Changes in Environmental Studies Effective Date: Fall Semester, 1995. Delete: On page 50, General Education Science three-hour electives, delete ENVR 140, Introduction to Energy and Environmental Issues Add: On page 50, General Education Science three-hour electives, add ENVR 110, Introduction to Oceanography. Rationale: Designate ENVR 110, Introduction to Oceanography, as second interdisciplinary General Education Science elective three-hour course for non-majors. Since we are dropping ENVR 140, we are not asking to add any more courses to General Education courses--we want to substitute ENVR 110 in its place. We are having difficulty staffing 140, whereas 110 is a normal part of Rick Maas's load in alternate falls. It is a very good interdisciplinary topics course. Delete: On page 113, II. Required courses outside the major...", delete CSCI 126, 141, 142, 143.. Rationale: Our faculty feel that most students come in with adequate computer science knowledge and, therefore, we prefer that they select from the Math series of courses. Add: On page 113, Track in Ecology and Environmental Biology, add to last line: "from ENVR 321, 341, 350, 432, 442, 443, 444; BIOL 332, 333, 334, 335, 337, 339, 350, 351, 356." Rationale: This change was suggested by Doris Harmon in order to make her bookkeepping easier. Delete: On page 114, delete ENVR 140, Introduction to Energy and Environmental Issues. Rationale: Lack of faculty time to teach course. Delete: On page 115, delete ENVR 221, Limnology. Add: On page 115, add ENVR 321, Limnology. Rationale: Request to change course number for ENVR 221, Limnology, to ENVR 321 because Rick Maas, the instructor, teaches this course at an advanced level and students want to use this course as part of the normal 300 series of courses. In the past, we have had to write exemption letters to the Registrar's Office permitting the 200 numbered course to serve as a 300-level elective. Delete: On page 115, delete ENVR 239, Mineral and Energy Resources. Rationale: Lack of time in Bill Miller's schedule to teach this course as a laboratory-based course. Delete: On page 115, delete ENVR 332, Principles and Practices of Environmental Management. The principles, practices and problems of managing the environment at the federal, state and local levels. Emphasis will be on regional planning and water quality management. Prerequisite: ENVR 130. Course offered every spring semester. Add: On page 115, add ENVR 332, Environmental Management. The principles, practices and problems of managing the environment at the federal, state and local levels. The course will focus on the complexities of environmental administration of renewable and nonrenewable resources, pollution control, and global problems. Prerequisite: ENVR 130. Course offered every spring semester. Impact Statement: Required course for Ecology and Natural Resource Management tracks. Proposal will not affect other major or university requirements of other departments. No affect on staffing needs or course offerings. Rationale: Change in course title and description to provide a more accurate description of course content. Add: On page 117, add ENVR 383, Environmental Planning. A focus on environmental problems associated with land planning, landscape design, and land use. Student exercises using various techniques and methods of landscape analysis are included with application to planning issues. Prerequisite: ENVR 130. Course offered every even year fall semester. Impact Statement: Advance elective environmental studies course that will be highly recommended for students in the Natural Resource Management Track. No impact on other departments or university requirements. Course taught by existing faculty of Environmental Studies. Rationale: This is a course that was part of the agreement for Kevin Moorhead's contract. Add: On page 117, add ENVR 384, Introduction to Geographic Information Systems. Introduction to computer hardware, software, and datasets used to examine landscape-level resource assessment and management issues. Laboratory exercises with raster and vector data, satellite images and aerial photography, image classification, and statistical analyses. Practical applications for land use planning will be emphasized. Prerequisites: ENVR 130 and experience with computers, or permission of the instructor. Course offered every odd year fall semester. Impact Statement: Advance elective environmental studies course that can fulfill a requirement of all tracks. Impact will be on Department of Computer Sciences when scheduling laboratories requiring computer facilities. Course taught by existing faculty of Environmental Studies. Rationale: UNCA has the appropriate computer hardware and software to offer GIS, an advanced technology for landscape analysis. Employment opportunities are rapidly expanding in this area. Excellent training potential for undergraduates. This is a course that was part of the agreement for Kevin Moorhead's contract. Delete: On page 117, delete ENVR 432, The Industrial State and the Consumer Society. Rationale: This is a cross-referenced course that is rarely taught by the Sociology Department and we have very few students requesting it.
