THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1795S Date of Senate Approval 2/9/95 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #19: Changes in Social Studies teacher education curriculum Effective Date: Fall, 1995 Delete: Last paragraph, p. 106, under "Certification Program for Secondary School (Grades 9 through 12)" -- "Persons seeking certification in Social Studies must:. . ." Add: Persons seeking certification in Social Studies (6-9 and 9-12) must: a) major in Economics, History, Political Science, or Sociology. b) complete ECON 200 or ECON 201; HIST 101, 102, and 315. Post-baccalaureate students and non-degree seeking students must also take HIST 151 and 152. ECON 201 is the strongly recommended alternative for 9-12 students. c) complete EDUC 130, POLS 220, SOC 240, and an additional social science course (SOC 240 and the additional social science course can fulfill general education requirements.) Impact: These changes will allow completion of a major in History with social studies certification (6-9 or 9-12) for < 128 hours. The changes include requiring one economics course instead of two, with 9-12 certification students strongly advised to take Econ 201 to meet state standards. Since Econ 201 fulfills a general education requirement and is also a requirement for accounting, management, and economics majors, the availability of the course is of concern. By offering a choice between Econ 200 and 201, social studies certification students will be less likely to find all class sections filled. Also, History majors will take POLS 220, which may count toward requirements for their major program. This aligns with the "Credit for Courses Outside History" which appears on page 127. These changes will not affect staffing needs or course offerings. Rationale: The changes will allow completion of a major in History with social studies certification in 128 hours and will meet the competencies mandated by NCATE and the State Dept. Delete II., under "Program in Social Studies Certification", p.127 Add: II. Required courses outside the major - ECON 200 or 201, EDUC 130, POLS 220, SOC 240, and an additional social science course as described in the Education section. Impact: This will allow students to select between ECON 200 and 201 (rather than requiring both) and reduces the number of hours students will be required to take to major in History and get Social Studies certification. ECON 201 is strongly recommended for 9-12 certification students. Rationale: This change will allow History majors with Social Studies certification to complete their degree in <128 hours and meet all competencies as mandated by NCATE and the State Dept. of Public Instruction. Add: On page 100, following paragraph on Economics Minor Program in Economics with Teacher Certification Students interested in teacher certification in Economics should consult the department chair. Impact: Alignment with what is in current catalog under Political Science, p. 182, for teacher certification. No changes in staffing or course offerings. Rationale: Standardizes catalog statement about social studies certification majors (Economics, History, Political Science, and Sociology). Add: On page 194, following paragraph on Sociology Minor Program in Sociology with Teacher Certification Students interested in teacher certification in Sociology should consult the department chair. Impact: Alignment with what is in current catalog under Political Science, p. 182, for teacher certification. No changes in staffing or course offerings. Rationale: Standardizes catalog statement about social studies certification majors (Economics, History, Political Science, and Sociology). Coordination: Signatures of concurrence are on the original document.
