THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1095S Date of Senate Approval 2/9/95 ----------------------------------------------------------------- - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #8: Catalog Changes in Education Changes in the K-6 teacher education curriculum; addition of EDUC 365, Educational Assessment, to replace PSYC 316, Tests and Measurements and how these changes affect other programs. Effective Date: Fall, 1995 Delete: I., p. 105 under "Certification Program in Elementary School Certification (Kindergarten through Grade 6)" Add: I. Required courses in Education - 39 hours, including: EDUC 310, 315, 317, 318, 319, 332, 340, 344, 382, 396, 455, and 496. Impact: No increase in the number of semester hours in K-6 certification program. No additional staffing needs. Impact due to changes in specific courses will be addressed elsewhere in this document. Rationale: Education 312 and 330 and 130 and 344 have been combined to be more compatible with the liberal arts model of teacher education that combines content and pedagogy. Courses were also combined to allow for the addition of Education 340, Methods of Teaching Mathematics (K-6), thereby increasing the number of hours required in mathematics from 6 to 10 as per National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards. Education 396 and 496 are new numbers for courses currently numbered 392 and 492, impact and rationale statements appear below. Delete: I., p. 106 under "Certification Program for Middle School (Grades 6 through 9)" Add: I. Required courses in Education - 27-30 hours, including EDUC 310, 314, 320, and 455. Language Arts and Social Studies students must also take 313, 380, 396 and 496. Mathematics students must also take 365, 383, 398, and 498. Science student must also take 365, 382, 398, and 498. Impact: Education 365, Educational Assessment (3 sh), is a new course designed to replace PSYC 316, Tests and Measurement, for mathematics and science certification students. All other certification students will continue to take PSYC 220, Education Psychology, which will add an assessment and measurement component. Assessment and measurement appropriate to each discipline will be added to the following methods courses to meet these competencies for non mathematics and science students: EDUC 314, 315, 317, 320, 332, 340, 344, 380, and 385. EDUC 365 will be taught once each year in the spring semester. The course will add an additional preparation for one faculty member who has agreed to design and teach the course. No new faculty members will be required. This change will neither increase nor decrease the number of hours required for students to complete certification programs. Rationale: This change is based on the request of the Psychology Department to drop PSYC 316 from their course offerings. Changes in PSYC 220 and the methods courses are to meet assessment and measurement competencies required by NCATE and NCSDPI for students not taking EDUC 365. Education 396 and 496 and 398 and 498 are new numbers for courses currently numbered 392 and 492, impact and rationale statements appear below. Coordination PSYC:__________________________________ Concur [Signature appears on original EDUC 365 document.] Education 314 is a new number for Education 300, Reading and Writing in the Content Areas (see rationale under EDUC 314 course description below). Delete: I., p. 106 under "Certification Program for Secondary School (grades 9 through 12)" Add: I. Required courses in Education - 22-24 hours, including: EDUC 310, 314, and 455. English and Social Studies students must also take 313, 380, 396, and 496. Latin students must also take 385, 396, and 496. Mathematics students must also take 365, 383, 398, and 498. Science students must also take 365, 382, 398, and 498. Impact: No impact on staffing. Currently three sections of EDUC 390/392 are being offered; three sections of 490/492 will be offered in the spring semester. This will continue with newly numbered courses. There will be no increase or decrease in number of hours taken by students to complete certification program. Rationale: Current EDUC 392 is being divided into two separate courses [EDUC 396, Research Methods in Education (K-12) and EDUC 398, Research Methods in Mathematics and Science Education (6-12)] to reflect the difference in content for science and mathematics certification students and other certification students. Science and mathematics students will come to the course with background in statistics; other students will not. Current EDUC 492 is being divided into two separate to acknowledge difference in type of research projects completed by students. Delete: II., p. 106 under "Certification Program for Secondary School (grades 9 through 12)" Add: II. Required course outside Education - 10-13 hours, including: PSYC 101 and 317. In addition, SOC 240 is required for Science students; PSYC 220 and 328 for Latin students; and PSYC 220 for English, Economics, History, and Social studies students. Impact: See above for deletion of PSYC 316 from curriculum. [NOTE: CHANGE IN NUMBER OF HOURS RELATES TO ERROR IN CURRENT CATALOG RATHER THAN CHANGE IN COURSES REQUIRED. NO ACTION NEEDED.] Delete: III., p. 106 Add: III. Recommended electives: for Social Studies students EDUC 317; for students other than those in Science, SOC 240. Add: IV. Other departmental requirements - Standard requirements outlined above for all certification students must be met. [NOTE: CHANGES IN SOCIAL STUDIES PROGRAM (p. 106) WILL APPEAR IN A SUBSEQUENT APC DOCUMENT.] Delete: I., p. 107 under "Certification Program in Art Certification (Kindergarten through Grade 12)" Add: Certification Program in Art (Kindergarten through Grade 12) I. Required courses in Education - 21 hours, including: EDUC 310, 314, 380, 396, 455, and 496. Recommended elective: EDUC 317/318. Impact: See above. Rationale: See above. Delete: I, p. 107 under "Certification Program in Theatre Arts (Kindergarten through Grade 12)" Add: I. Required courses in Education - 24-15 hours, including: EDUC 310, 313 or 317/318, 314, 380, 396, 455, and 496. Recommended elective: EDUC 317/318 or 313. Impact: See above. Rationale: See above. Delete: I., p. 107 under "Certification Program in Foreign Languages (Kindergarten through grade 12)" Add: I. Required courses in Education - 28 hours, including: EDUC 310, 314, 317, 380, 385, 396, 455, and 496. Recommended elective: 318 or 313. Impact: See above. Rationale: See above. The following changes are the result of combining current courses and adding new courses to the curriculum. Other changes occur because of new course numbers: Delete: EDUC 130 General Geography (K-12) (3), p. 108 Add: EDUC 130 General Geography (6-12) (3) A general survey of physical and cultural geography, the objectives, basic skills, and study of methods of the geographer as applied to the teaching of geography. Required for certification in Social Studies 6-9 and 9- 12. Others admitted by permission of instructor. Same as GEOG 130. Course offered every spring semester. Impact: This course will now be offered for students seeking middle school and secondary social studies certification only. K-6 certification students will cover geography standards and competencies in Education 344 and will no longer be required to take a separate geography course. This will reduce the overload that occurs in this class each semester and will better meet the needs of both groups of students. Rationale: This change will enable 6-12 social studies certification students to meet their required competencies with more depth and breadth. Geography is now a required course for secondary students in NC. This was not the case when this course was implemented. Delete: 300 Reading and Writing in the Content Areas, 6-12 (4) Add: 314 Reading and Writing in the Content Areas, 6-12 (4) Teaching reading and writing skills in content areas to a wide range of ability levels and skills in a classroom; methodologies to improve content area teaching; individualizing instruction; method of informal assessment and interpreting norm referenced and criteria referenced tests. Field experiences required. Prerequisites: EDUC 310; 2.5 GAP; or permission of instructor. Course offered every semester. Rationale: Number change to place Reading and Writing in the Content Areas in appropriate sequential course order. EDUC 310 is a prerequisite to EDUC 314 (currently numbered EDUC 300). Delete: 315 Creative Arts, K-6 (4) Add: 315 Creative Arts, K-6 (4) Integrated approach to the teaching visual art, music, and creative drama appropriate to developmental levels; culminates in the production and presentation of an integrated teacher resource unit. Formative assessment tools focus on portfolios. Prerequisite: EDUC 310; or permission of instructor. Course offered every fall semester. Rationale: Change in course description to include assessment. Delete: EDUC 312 Children's Literature, K-6 (3), p. 109 Delete: EDUC 330 The Communication Arts, K-12 (3), p. 110 Add: EDUC 317 Teaching Language and Literature, K-9 (3) Teaching the language arts (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in elementary school and middle school with emphasis on children's language development and whole language approach to integrated teaching and assessment. Course offered every semester. Add: EDUC 318 Teaching Language and Literature: Children's Literature Lab, K-6 (1) Study of a wide range of excellent children's literature in the various genres. Designed to develop your skills of literary analysis and your appreciation of the art of illustration in children's literature. To be taken simultaneously with EDUC 317. Course offered every semester. Impact: This change will have no impact on university requirements. This change is a reduction of two-three- hour courses, EDUC 312 and EDUC 330 to a four-hour block, which combines language arts competencies and development of knowledge in children's literature. This change will not affect the Education Department's current staffing. The instructor of the combined courses is also the instructor of the two separate courses. The combination will give the department the ability to offer the course every semester, unlike in the past when each course was offered one semester only. Rationale: This change was a result of the Department of Education's response to students' concerns about the length of the program and the desire of the faculty to apply best practice in the field of education. Just as most language arts instruction is taking a "whole language" or integrated approach to the teaching of reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking, so the faculty believed it would be appropriate to combine the teaching of language arts and children's literature. Within the course, students work with complete texts, the literature, and apply various literacy- learning strategies. For example, students do not discuss questioning strategies without also applying questioning to an actual text and determining how well their questions enhance students' critical thinking and responding. Delete: 320 Middle School Principles, Practices, and Materials (3) Add: 320 Middle School Principles, Practices, and Materials (3) Emphasizes the developmental goals of the middle school, curriculum and methods of instruction appropriate for middle grade students, assessment of student learning, and materials appropriate for middle grade students. Observation in the middle schools is required. Prerequisite: EDUC 310. Course offered every fall semester. Rationale: Change in course description to include assessment. Delete: 332 Foundations of Reading Instruction, (K-12) (3) Add: 332 Foundations of Reading Instruction, K-12 (3) Designed to develop competencies in teaching reading. The reading process, historical development, approaches, linguistics, world recognition, comprehension and current trends developed. Students are evaluated on development of holistic classroom reading program. Field work required. Prerequisites: EDUC 317, 318; PSYC 220; or permission of instructor. Course offered every semester. Rationale: Change in course description to include assessment. Add: 340 Methods of Teaching Mathematics, K-6 (4) Examination of theoretical and practical issues related to teaching mathematics to elementary school children. Designed to prepare students to teach mathematics effectively at the elementary level, including the development and review of techniques for measuring, grading, analyzing, and reporting student achievement. Involves lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and ten hours of classroom observation. Prerequisites: MATH 157 and 158 or permission of instructor. Course offered every spring semester. Impact: This course will be offered to students who are pursuing elementary certification. K-6 students will take MATH 157, 158 and EDUC 340, a total of 10 hours, this satisfying the recommendation of the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics (NCTM) standards. The introduction of this course will not seriously affect the teaching of Math 157 and 158; the methodological aspects of these courses will be dealt with in EDUC 340, thus allowing more time to consider the content aspects in Math 157 and 158. Total number of hours in K-6 certification program will not change. The course will be taught by a current faculty member who was hired to design and teach this course. Rationale: Without this course, K-6 students will have only 6 sh of mathematics (Math 157 and 158), falling short of NCTM's standards. This course will not only provide the additional hours, but it will help students meet the requirements for K-6 certification. Failure to add this course could cost UNCA NCATE accreditation in K-6 certification. Coordination: MATH:____________________________________ Concur [Signature appears on original K-6 APC document.] Delete: EDUC 344 Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary School (K-6) (3), p. 110 Add: EDUC 344 Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary School, K-6 (4) Curriculum design, consideration of various methods and materials in the social studies, work with short-term and long-range planning, experience with audio-visual equipment and computer technology, basic geographic skills and study of the methods of the geographer as applied to the teaching of geography. Field experience in a public school required. Prerequisites: EDUC 310; HIST 101 or 102. Course offered every semester. Impact: This change consolidates general geography and social studies methods for K-6 certification students. Social Studies Methods will become a 4-hour course rather than a 3-hour course, as currently taught. This reduces the social science requirements by 2 hours and allows these 2 hours to be included in the math requirements. The required competencies for geography for K-6 certification students will be included in this new course. Rationale: The consolidation of general geography and social studies methods will meet the competencies as mandated by NCATE and the State Department of Public Instruction. This new 4-hour course will lessen the social studies course work for students by 2 sh, which permits the reallocation of these hours to mathematics, which, by NCATE standards must add 3 sh hours to the K-6 program. This also corrects an error which was in the catalog, regarding Hist 102, 103. Add: 365 Educational Assessment, K-12 (3) Intended for students pursuing teacher certification. The course examines theoretical and practical aspects of classroom assessment, including the development and review of assessment methods, test construction, reliability, validity, item analysis, grading, reporting test scores, and basic statistics and hypothesis testing. Prerequisites: EDUC 310; PSYC 317; or permission of instructor. Course offered every spring semester. Impact: See above. Rationale: See above. Delete: 380 Methods and Management in Teaching, 6-12 (4) Add: 380 Methods and Management in Teaching, 6-12 (4) Planning, teaching, evaluation and management essential for classroom teaching; use of educational technology in designing lessons; application of methodologies appropriate to subject area; methods of informal and formal assessment and grading. Required field experiences; should be taken the semester prior to student teaching (EDUC 455). Prerequisites: EDUC 314; PSYC 317; formal admission to Teacher Education Program; or permission of instructor. Course offered every semester. Rationale: Change in course description to include assessment.
