THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0895S Date of Senate Approval 1/26/95 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #5: Expansion in Health and Fitness Fulfillment of the one-hour General Education Fitness Development Option by Basketball (HF 121) and Water Aerobics (HF 122) Effective Date: Spring semester 1995 for adoption; Fall 1995 (1995-96) catalog. Proposal: That Basketball (one hour) be assigned a course number of HF 121 and Water Aerobics (one hour) be assigned a course number of HF 122 and both courses be added to the Health and Fitness course offerings in the UNCA 1995-96 catalog as Fitness Development Options. Add: Health and Fitness (HF), page 124 under Fitness Development Course Options (Grading is S/U) HF 121 Basketball (1) HF 122 Water Aerobics (1) Impact Statement: Basketball will not require any additional faculty, staff, or resources. Water Aerobics requires one and one-half adjunct hours each semester. No additional adjunct hours will be required for Water Aerobics. Current resources will be re-allocated to meet this need. Rationale: Students have been requesting a basketball course for several semesters. Ray Ingram (head coach, women's basketball) and Lynn Griffin (assistant head coach, women's basketball) want to teach the course. They will integrate both aerobic and anaerobic fitness into each class session to the extent that basketball will meet the criteria for a Fitness Development Course Option and, therefore, should be approved to satisfy the one-hour fitness requirement. Debby Singleton (adjunct) is teaching Water Aerobics during the Fall 1994 semester. She is certified by the National Aquatic Exercise Association as a water aerobics instructor. The Water Aerobics class was over-enrolled, with a waiting list. Mid-term course evaluations were highly favorable. Water aerobics is an excellent, low-impact fitness option for all students. It offers older or disabled students, who often have to do an independent study, an opportunity to fulfill their fitness requirement in a traditional class setting. Water Aerobics should be approved to satisfy the one-hour fitness requirement. NOTE: Make appropriate change on page 48. "Fitness Development (Activity): One Course from HF 121-129 1 semester hour
