HF 220 Introduction to Sports Medicine (3) HF 320 Advanced Injury Assessment (3) HF 321 Therapeutic Modalities and Rehabilitation (4)" Add: Health and Fitness (HF), page 124, between the Health Promotion Minor and the Fitness Development Course Options. "Sports Medicine Minor 19 hours distributed as follows: HF 220, HF 320, HF 321, HF 322, HF 420, and HF 421. Students seeking to meet academic requirements for National Athletic Trainers Association certification exam eligibility are encouraged to take HF 153 to meet the general education requirement for Health and Fitness. Students pursuing a Sports Medicine Minor should pay particular attention to Health and Fitness course prerequisites to ensure fulfillment of their major degree requirements within the minimum number of hours. Add: page 126, after third paragraph entitled "Therapeutic Modalities and Rehabilitation" "HF 322, Kinesiology, 3 credit hours Science of human motion based on the relationship between anatomic and mechanical principles. HF 420, Physiology of Exercise, 3 credit hours Study of the physiological reactions to exercise. Emphasis will be placed on muscle metabolism and neurologic stimulation and contraction. Cardiorespiratory responses to exercise as well as the development of nutritional and training programs to enhance these systems will be discussed. Prerequisites: Biol 105, 223. Pre-or co-requisite: Biol 338. Taught every odd Spring Semester. HF 421, Seminar in Sports Medicine, 3 credit hours Examination of legal, ethical, and managerial issues pertaining to Sports Medicine. Review of NATA competencies and behavioral objectives. Project will involve design of facility including budgeting, bidding, purchasing, and staffing. Prerequisites: HF 220, 320, 321. Taught every odd Spring Semester." Impact Statement: The addition of a Sports Medicine Minor in the Department of Health and Fitness will only enhance the appeal of majors already in place at UNCA. The minor fits easily into Biology and Management majors. The additions will not adversely affect any other programs currently at UNCA. The courses may increase the appeal of UNCA to students interested in pre-medicine , pre-physical therapy, Health Care Management, and Health Promotion programs. No additional staff, faculty, or resources will be necessary. Jeff Taylor, coordinator of Sports Medicine, has previously taught these courses as "Special Topics" and would continue to be the one teaching them if they obtain an HF listing. Moreover, the courses will allow students to further utilize the laboratory space in the new health and fitness building. Rationale: Enrollments in sports medicine classes clearly indicate student interest in sports medicine at UNCA. Thirty-seven students are enrolled in sports medicine courses for fall semester 1994. Additionally, the proposed courses have been taught as "Special Topics" courses and the class enrollments clearly indicate student interest in Sports Medicine at UNCA. Also, students must successfully complete these courses to meet the academic requirements to be eligible to sit for the National Athletic Trainers Association national certification examination test. The link between health promotion and the liberal arts is well established at UNCA. Students must open their minds to accepting new and challenging ideas if they are to accept the concept that through informed, conscious choices, they can assume greater control over their lives, their behavior, and their health. Sports medicine offers another dimension to the study of health promotion and wellness. The study of sports medicine; of, ideally, preventing injury to, or, when required, repairing a healthy well- conditioned individual, is a time-honored extension of the art of health promotion and wellness. Evidence indicates that Sports Medicine programs are a viable option at both public and private quality liberal arts institutions (see Appendix A). UNCA is in a unique position of having the resources to prepare students for advanced study in many of the fields which encompass sports medicine. The Sports Medicine Minor will embrace various disciplines to provide students with a sound base of knowledge and to assist them in making choices regarding a lifetime goal. Students also will develop a proficiency in recognizing and resolving problems that can result from physical activity. This is a valuable skill for anyone who is physically active; and physical activity for our students is, of course, a goal of health promotion and wellness. Statistics from Enrollment Services indicate a substantial and increasing number of student prospects interested in an academic program in Sports Medicine based in the liberal arts. Twelve students, considering initial enrollment at UNCA for Fall 1988 through Fall 1992, listed Sports Medicine as their number one area of interest. For the period of Fall 1993 through Fall 1996, 49 prospective applicants listed Sports Medicine as number one. During the same periods, prospective applicants who listed Sports Medicine as their number two area of interest went from 14 to 39. The 26 students in HF 220, Introduction to Sports Medicine, is an indication of the interest in Sports Medicine demonstrated by students currently enrolled at UNCA. The population of students (past and present) involved in the UNCA Sports Medicine Program are majoring in a variety of fields. Many of these students are interested in pursuing careers in the health fields, such as physical therapy, medicine, and sports medicine. The presence of a Sports Medicine Minor on the UNCA campus has the potential to increase the number of students electing to attend UNCA. Presently, there are relatively few education programs in this geographic area such as this proposed minor would provide. Given the appeal of our setting and the indicated interest shown by prospective applicants, a Sports Medicine Minor would add a valuable discipline to UNCA's liberal arts curriculum. Tables 1-4 illustrate how a student may major in Biology or Management within 120 or 129 hours respectively. Students majoring in Management are at a slight disadvantage due to the Biology prerequisites. The differences between Tables 1 & 2, and 3 & 4 reflect a student entering in an odd or even academic year. All requirements are listed and there are no hidden prerequisites.
