THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0594F Date of Senate Approval 12/8/94 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #3: Minor in Multimedia Arts and Sciences Date Effective: Fall, 1995 Inserted at Catalog page 168 þþþ after Mathematics and before Music. Minor in Multimedia Arts and Sciences (mmas) Program Faculty: A. Hantz (Mass Communication), C. Bennett (Physics), W. Kirby (Music), R. Bowen (Drama), R. Tynes (Art), D. Brock (Computer Science) The minor in multimedia arts and sciences involves the integration of work in Art, Music, Physics, Computer Science, and Mass Communication. The minor enables students from a variety of majors to: 1) learn the technical considerations involved with the computerþ based manipulation of image and sound, 2) make aesthetic choices about the manipulation of sound and image, and 3) understand the connections among the various fields of study involved in image and sound production. Students interested in the Multimedia Arts and Sciences minor should consult any of the Program Faculty listed above. Requirements of the Minor Students must take 24 hours for the minor. The 12 Required credits are: CSCI201, PHYS101 or PHYS102, two courses from ART100, MCOM380, and MUSC131. Twelve hours of minor electives are required, selected from the following: ART100, CSCI254, CSCI346, CSCI361, CSCI363, MCOM205, MCOM303, MCOM305, MCOM307, MCOM380, MCOM435, MGMT384, MUSC131, MUSC335, MUSC384, MUSC385, MUSC386, MUSC387, PHIL310, PHYS101, PHYS102, or MMAS Special Topics. Elective choices must represent at least two academic departments, and may not be courses from the student's major department. 171þ3, 271þ3, 371þ3, 471þ3 Special Topics in Multimedia Arts and Sciences (1þ3) Courses not otherwise included in the catalog but for which there will be special needs. May be repeated for credit as subject matter changes. Courses offered on demand. RATIONALE The rationale is as described in the previously submitted request to plan an academic major. Although we do not have the resources to support a full major degree program at this time, the departments concerned have agreed to cooperate by sharing existing resources. We believe that this cooperation will provide sufficient support for a minor program. IMPACT No impact on present staffing or enrollment is anticipated, because it only involves a few students, many of whom are doing this minor on a special, ad hoc basis. Essentially this proposal institutionalizes a special minor that we have created from time to time for interested students. The MCOM courses that are new (MCOM 380, 305 and 307) represent curricular changes that Mass Communication needs to do regardless of this minor. The proposal materials for these courses is going to the APC at this time. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ATTACHED.
