Students readmitted to UNCA prior to the fall of 1994 may apply for consideration under this policy via petition to the Enrollment Services Advisory Committee. Delete: Not Applicable Add: Page 4 following Non-degree Student Admission Policy Conditional Readmission Policy. Degree seeking students who left UNCA not in good standing (GPA below a 2.0) may apply for readmission to UNCA under the Conditional Readmission Policy. To be considered under this policy, a student must not have been enrolled at UNCA for a period of at least 3 years and must show evidence that the conditions which caused the initial failure at UNCA are no longer present. Applicants shall be reviewed by the Enrollment Services Advisory Committee. Those approved shall be conditionally admitted and allowed to take 24 semester hours under this status. At the completion of 24 semester hours, students will be re-reviewed for full admission to UNCA under standards in place for transfer students. Academic work attempted prior to the conditional readmission shall be re-evaluated at this point and only courses with grades of C or better will be applied to the students present degree program. The students' historical transcript will remain intact, however, as with transfer students, hours will be applied toward the degree, but grades in these courses will not factor into a student's GPA. Students may utilize this policy one time. Impact Statement and Rationale: This policy is likely to effect 6 - 10 students per academic year. This policy would help students who fit the following description: The student who initially enrolls and does very poorly due to financial, health, family or maturity problems. After a period of time (3 years or more) the student demonstrates that the conditions that cause of the initial failure has been eliminated. This can be demonstrated by showing successful performance at another academic institution, through successful work history or through appropriate medical/psychological documentation. At the present time, students who fit this description are re-admitted to UNCA through the Enrollment Services Advisory Committee. However, their likelihood of achieving the 2.0 GPA required for graduation is significantly diminished due to the deficit grade condition that exists upon their readmission. Students are demoralized by receiving warning notices semester after semester, even though their performance upon their return is more than adequate, sometimes even Dean's List level. Our present practice places students who first did poorly at UNCA at a greater disadvantage than similar students who have the same profile, but whose initial college experience was at another institution. This policy change would treat both categories of student in the same manner. The 24 attempted hour trial period will allow us to distinguish between the students who can perform at a satisfactory level from those who cannot. Similar policies exist at UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, ASU, UNC-Wilmington and Western Carolina. All have been initiated in the last three years.
