THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1093F Date of Senate Approval 12/16/93 Signature of Senate Chair ___________________________ Date _________________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval __________________________________ Date ____________________ Denied __________________________________ Date ____________________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document # 11: Catalog changes in Biology Effective Date: Fall 1994 [in the following section, add courses indicated to the lists] Biology II. a) Phylogenetic Biology - BIOL 332, 333, 334, 335 [add] 350, 351, 356, 337 (mammology) b) Organismal Biology - BIOL 345, 346, 455 [add] 338, 336 (parasitol.) _______________________________________________________________ Impact Statement: 1) Memos (if any) from affected departments or programs are attached 2) The proposed changes will have no forseeable effect on present or future staffing. Rationale: The courses added to II. a., b. are currently taught by the Department of Biology, and have been allowed by the Chair to fulfill the distributional requirements as indicated. Formal inclusion in the lists will allow students more options for fulfilling the degree requirements, and facilitate planning their schedules. COORDINATION: EDUCATION:__________________(Impact: none/see attachment)________ ENVR. STUDIES:______________(Impact: none/see attachment)________ Effective Date: Fall 1994 Add Biology 336 - Parasitology (4 hours credit) as a course for majors. Insert in numerical sequence on page 78 of the 1993-1994 catalog. Catalog description for Biology 336 should read þ Study of comparative morphology, physiology, ecology, disease processes and systematics of major parasitic phyla. Emphasis is placed on understanding the ecology and adaptive mechanisms which enable a parasite to live within the body of a host. Prerequisites: BIOL 105, 210 or permission of instructor.þ Impact Statement: Addition of this course will provide students with an additional option for the Organismal Biology section of the restricted electives within the major. Although designed as a course for majors, it would also serve as an organismal option for students seeking Teaching Certification in Biology and for students in the Ecology and Environmental Biology track of the Environmental Studies Program. Parasitology would be offered every second year during the Fall semester. Formal addition of this course to the catalog will not substantively affect the Biology Departmentþs staffing or resources since this is an area of specialty for one of the faculty (Stuart) and has been taught on a regular schedule as a special topics course. Rationale: Parasitology is the area of specialty of one of the Biology faculty (Michael Stuart) and has been taught three times as Special Topics 374: Fall 1989 - 12 students; Fall 1991 - 6 students (time conflict with Organic Chemistry which is required for biology majors); and Fall 1993 - 17 students. Approval for catalog inclusion would represent formal recognition of an area previously taught as a special topics course and allow its use as an organismal option within the restricted electives grouping of the Biology Department. COORDINATION Education: _________________________________ (Impact: none /see attachment) Environmental Studies: ______________________(Impact: none /see attachment) Effective Date: Fall 1994 Add Biology 337 - Mammalogy (4 hours credit) as a course for majors. Insert in numerical sequence on page 78 of the 1993-1994 catalog. Catalog description for Biology 337 should read þ Study of the evolution, comparative morphology, ecology and systematics of the Class Mammalia. Emphasis is placed on understanding the ecology and adaptive mechanisms of the different mammalian orders. Prerequisites: BIOL 105, 210 or permission of instructor.þ Impact Statement: Addition of this course will provide students with an additional option for the Phylogenetic Biology section of the restricted electives within the major. Although designed as a course for majors, it would also serve as an phylogenetic option for students seeking Teaching Certification in Biology and for students in the Ecology and Environmental Biology track of the Environmental Studies Program. Mammalogy would be offered every second year during the Fall semester. Formal addition of this course to the catalog will not substantively affect the Biology Departmentþs staffing or resources since this is an area of special interest for one of the faculty (Stuart) and has been taught on a regular schedule as a special topics course. Rationale: Mammalogy is an area of special interest for one of the Biology faculty (Michael Stuart) and has been taught twice as Special Topics 374: Fall 1990 - 9 students; Fall 1992 - 15 students. Approval for catalog inclusion would represent formal recognition of an area previously taught as a special topics course and allow its use as an phylogenetic option within the restricted electives grouping of the Biology Department.
