Poole, Chairman of the Board of Governors, University of North Carolina; C. D. Spangler, President of the University of North Carolina; and a copy to Jay Banks, Chairman Board of Trustees, University of North Carolina Asheville. Dear Chairman Poole and President Spangler: The sudden and surprising announcement that Chancellor Schuman will leave office at the end of this semester has caused disquiet in the UNCA community. By and large, faculty and students have been well satisfied with his leadership and regard him as a person of integrity and good will. We have been pleased with the institution's progress under his administration and we agree with his vision for UNCA's future. While we understand that a university chancellor has a variety of constituencies, we think there should be consultation within the campus community when a chancellor's tenure is at stake. And, while we recognize that a chancellor serves at the pleasure of the President and the Board of Governors, we are accustomed to a generous measure of due process in personnel decisions. An academic institution should hold itself to a high standard of deliberateness and civility in the way it conducts its business. Because these views are widely held among academic people, we fear that the circumstances surrounding Dr. Schuman's departure from office could have a negative effect on the ability of UNCA, and other constituent institutions, to recruit high-quality leadership for the future. We hope you will do everything you can to ameliorate this difficulty.
