THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2093S Date of Senate Approval 3/11/93 Signature of Senate Chair _______________________________ Date _________________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval ________________________________________ Date ____________________ Denied _________________________________________ Date ____________________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #17 "Catalog Changes in Drama" The Department of Drama and the drama faculty present its proposal for changes in the Drama curriculum for the 1993-94 catalog. OVERVIEW 1. The proposed changes will not increase the total number of hours required for all students majoring in drama (and will decrease the hours in the General drama concentration). 2. These changes will not require additional faculty positions. 3. No additional equipment or other physical resources will be required. 4. All changes are intended to be effective Fall Semester 1993. RATIONALE 1. These changes in the drama curriculum are a direct result of the current Departmental Self-Study mandated by the University Planning Council. 2. These changes have been designed by the drama faculty to produce a curriculum that is more coherent, to help students draw stronger connections among the various components of the program, and to build on the knowledge students have gained in the Humanities Program and Freshman Writing. The new drama curriculum is also intended to prompt students to take both General Education courses and courses in the major in a more effective sequence. Changes in individual courses are designed to strengthen the information presented and offer a sounder pedagogical approach to teaching and learning. Summary of Changes in Curriculum 1. Reduce DRAM 112, Introduction to Acting II, to 3 credit hours (currently 4 credit hours) Rationale: The 4th credit hour was dedicated to voice production work; with the implementation of a new voice production laboratory sequence, this additional hour is now unnecessary. 2. Eliminate Drama 101, Voice Production Laboratory. Create a new two-course sequence, Drama 103 - 104, Voice Production Laboratory I - II. Rationale: By creating a two-semester sequence, we will provide more continuity and more breadth to our voice training program. We will require students intending to concentrate in Acting and Directing to take Voice Production Laboratory I - II simultaneously with Drama 111 - 112. The Voice Production Laboratory requirement will be eliminated for students concentrating in Design and Production. General Drama majors will take Voice Production Laboratory I only. 3. Reduce Drama 121 - 122, Elements of Production I - II, to 3 credit hours (currently 4 hours each) Rationale: Paul Sweeney is reorganizing this sequence of courses to provide more thorough class instruction, while retaining a more concentrated laboratory component in order to prepare a student to demonstrate production competence skills. He will provide structured, supervised times, equivalent to rehearsal times, for students to demonstrate competence in connection with Theatre UNCA productions. 4. Require Design and Production majors to take both introductory acting classes. Rationale: As a liberal arts program, Drama requires all majors to study all the basic components of drama, regardless of their concentration: acting, technical, production, play texts and analysis, and theatre history. Previously, actors took two courses in technical production, giving them a broad exposure, while technical production majors received only a one-course introduction to acting. The new requirements bring a more extended exposure to both areas to students in both concentrations. 5. Eliminate two cognates in the Literature Department (Masterpieces of Drama and Introduction to Shakespeare). Add a new three-course sequence, Drama 244-245- 246, History of the Theatre I, II, III, which combines theatre history and dramatic texts from the Greeks through the mid-19th century. Add a Shakespeare in Performance course to the Drama offerings and require it in all programs. Rationale: a. It is common practice in drama programs around the country to include the study of play texts concurrently with the study of theatrical history. These new courses will allow us to provide more coherent integration (similar to the Humanities Program's approach) of the plays of each era with their means of production. These courses will combine the study of texts, the social and political characteristics of each era, the architecture of the theatre, the visual style of scenery and its relationship to other visual arts, the changing technology of theatre production, the economics and organization of theatre companies, the social status of theatre and acting, and the contributions of important men and women. This expanded sequence of courses will offer an opportunity to incorporate consideration of non-Western theatre. b. Due to scheduling difficulties, students often do not take the currently separately-offered dramatic literature courses and theatre history courses in correct sequence. This diminishes their ability to draw connections and often leaves them unprepared for senior-level courses in directing and design which assume a prior knowledge of dramatic texts and theatre history. We have many Seniors who are just now taking these courses, which should have been taken during their Sophomore or Junior years. The new requirement will help prevent this and should bring more coherence to a student's program of study. 6. Remove Drama 111, Introduction to Acting, from the substitutes for Arts Lab ( page 44 in 1992-93 Catalog). Retain Drama 210, Oral Interpretation; Drama 121, Elements of Production I; and Drama 317, Creative Drama for Teachers, as Arts Lab substitutes. Rationale: Over the last 5 years we have consistently offered two sections of Arts 312, Workshop in Drama, each semester serving as Art Labs in Acting. This negates the need to use Drama 111, Introduction to Acting, a 3-credit course, for that purpose, and will allow DRAM 111 to be more properly focused as an introduction to the major. 7. Delete "Foreign Language requirement" from each program definition. Rationale: This is a general education requirement and does not need to be reiterated in our program descriptions. 8. Delete Voice Production Lab from page 44 as an Arts Lab substitute. Rationale: This is an editorial mistake. Drama 101 is taken with Drama 111, not Drama 121; the proposed changes will eliminate 111 as a substitute. Drama 121 will remain an arts lab substitute. 9. Change new course numbers in Teacher Certification Program. Rationale: This is an editorial change only.
