PHYS 105, 131, and 231 may not be included in these 10 hours. Notice that these minor courses have prerequisites of MATH 191, 192 and 291. Replace: with Physics Minor 21 hours: PHYS 221, 222, 324, 331; 9 additional hours in Physics including one from PHYS 323, 325 or 400. PHYS 105, 131, and 231 may not be included in these 9 hours. Notice that these minor courses have prerequisites of MATH 191, 192 and 291. Impact: Students minoring in Physics will now be required to take Modern Physics I and Experimental Physics I (PHYS 324 and 331) and will be required to choose one of : Modern Optics, Thermal Physics or Modern Physics II (PHYS 323, 325 and 400). A total of 21 hours in Physics will now be required to minor in Physics as opposed to 18 hours previously. There should be no significant impact on the Physics Dept. Rationale: A knowledge of the concepts of Modern Physics is essential for any student majoring or minoring in Physics and these concepts will be reinforced in the Experimental Physics I lab which deals primarily with experiments in Modern Physics. The other required course at the 300 or 400 level will introduce the student minoring in Physics to at least one other branch of physics or will broaden the student's background in modern and quantum physics. These new minor requirements also bring the hours required for a minor in Physics in line with the number of hours required for a minor in the other physical sciences (Atmospheric Sciences, Biology, Environmental Studies and Chemistry) which range between 20 and 24 hours.
