Call to Order The 1991-92 Faculty Senate met on Thursday, April 16, 1992, in Karpen Hall - room 005. Alan Hantz, Chair, called the meeting to order at 3:30 pm. II. Executive Committee Report Dr. Hantz gave the Executive Committee Report. Senate Documents The VCAA has approved Senate document #1092S discussed at the last Senate meeting. Senate Reorganization Meeting The Senate reorganization meeting will convene on Thursday, May 7, 1992, at 3:30 pm in KH-005. Dr. Hantz acknowledged the contributions of outgoing Senators Greenawalt, McClary, Obergfell, and Sabo. Dr. Hantz was also recognized for his contributions to the Senate. New MAHEC Facility A new MAHEC facility located on Weaver Blvd. will be complete in November. Next Fall, Dr. William Bruce will bring a MAHEC representative to the Senate for a brief report regarding future cooperative ventures between MAHEC and the University. Day Care Negotiations with Highland Hospital are continuing regarding the rental price of the facility for a day care establishment. The paperwork has been submitted to form the non-profit corporation. Interviews are being held for individuals and groups who might run the facility. Proposals have been submitted by the Buncombe County Child Development, the "Y", the Jewish Community Center, the Marriott Corporation, and two individuals. Dr. Iovacchini is working on this endeavor. III. SGA Report No report. IV. Administrative Report No report. V. Academic Policies Committee Report Dr. Bill Sabo reported for the Academic Policies Committee. - Second Reading APC #24: Minor in International Studies. Discussion followed concerning whether the program minor might eventually have core courses in the area. Editorial changes were made to alter the word "department" to "academic" and to correct a history course date. APC #24 passed with a vote of 9 to 2 with two abstentions and became Senate Document #2592S. VI. Institutional Development Committee Report Dr. Don Lisnerski gave the Institutional Development Committee report. Self Study The IDC has completed the Self Study of the Political Science department. The wording of the recommendations will be reviewed at the meeting tomorrow. In general terms the UPC recommends: 1) the administration help the Political Science department find a "sense of place" where faculty, staff, and students can have a common space they can share; 2) the direction of the department needs to be clarified; 3) restate that UNCA's primary mission is teaching. Next Meeting At tomorrow's meeting the UPC will look at the Graduate Council Guidelines and the budget requests for non-restricted funds for next year. Approximately $90K will be available for non-restricted funds and requests amount to nearly $1,300,000. VII. Faculty Welfare and Development Committee Dr. Bruce Greenawalt gave the Faculty Welfare and Development Committee report. Liability Insurance Dr. Greenawalt received a document from Cheryl McClary describing a summary of her work on liability insurance. Dr. McClary requested that the FWDC hold the report as she was unable to attend today's meeting. The document will be forwarded to the new FWDC. Senate Elections The following people were elected to the 1992-1995 Senate in recent voting: Charlotte Goedsche Bill Miller Robert Yearout The following faculty were elected at large: Pat Snoyer Keith Ray Alternates chosen were: Dan Millspaugh Mary Lynn Manns Gary Nallan Grievance Committee Gwen Henderson has been elected to the Grievance Committee. A run-off election is underway to break two tie votes. Committee Elections Committee elections were held with the following results: Graduate Council (MLA) Randy Booker Paul McDonald (It was the Sense of the Senate that a female member should be appointed by the VCAA.) Minority Affairs Cathy Mitchell Distinguished Scholars and Honorary Degrees Committee Gwen Henderson James Perry University Research Council Pamela Laughon - two year term Paul Sweeney - two year term George Yates - one year term (replaces Dr. Reinecke for 92-93 term) University Teaching Council Keith Bramlett Gary Nallan Cat Nilan University Relations Advisory Committee Mel Blowers Gary Miller Arnold Wengrow UNCA Foundation Board Mel Blowers VIII.
