DELETE: on Page 43 Bibliography (1 semester hour) Because so much college work depends on the ability to do independent library research, all students are required to take a Bibliography course or pass an exemption examination. This requirement should be satisfied as early as possible. BIB 101 Bibliography 1 semester hour 2. DELETE: on Page 68 BIBLIOGRAPHY (BIB) This program is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for effective research and the use of library resources. 101 Bibliography (1) Introduction to library resources and research tools; efficient strategies for retrieving information; demonstration of library skills through a well-planned and carefully executed laboratory experience in retrieving and evaluating material on a selected topic. 3. ADD: on (Page 43) Library Research (1 semester hour) The understandings and skills of library research are essential for the liberally educated person. Because the academic library is central to the University's intellectual life and is a primary workshop for students who have a genuine will to know, UNCA endeavors to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to function in this environment and to continue independent, lifelong learning. Students should complete either LR 101 or 102 in the Freshman year. LR is a pre- or co-requisite for Language 102 and a prerequisite to declaring a major. LR 101 Library Research (Course) 1 semester hour LR 102 Library Research (Competency) 1 semester hour 4. ADD: (Page 121 after the section on Italian) LIBRARY RESEARCH (LR) This program introduces students to library resources and research tools and efficient strategies for retrieving information. LR 101 or LR 102 is a pre- or co-requisite for LANG 102 and a prerequisite for declaring a major. Students who have satisfied the Bibliography requirement by taking Bibliography 101 or the competency examination which earned no credit hours may not take Library Research 101 or 102 for credit. 101 Library Research (1) Introduction to library resources and research tools in a classroom and library environment. Students demonstrate knowledge and research strategies through exams and a laboratory experience in retrieving and evaluating material on a selected topic. (Students may not receive credit for both LR 101 or 102.) 102 Library Research (1) While the content and objectives are similar to LR 101, learning is achieved by independent study and measured by a competency exam rather than by the typical classroom format. Students meet in one required class session for preparation guidelines. Use of text materials, exercises involving library use, optional workshops and consultation with reference librarians provide the primary means of learning. Grading is S/U. (Students may not receive credit for both LR 101 and 102.) 5. DELETE: (on page 120) from the list of prerequisites for Humanities 214 and 224 the phrase "BIB 101". E. Impact These changes should not affect major, minor or university requirements. The desirable impact should be to prepare students at an early time in their undergraduate experience to more effectively achieve the objectives of other courses. The basic changes are: (1) students are provided two clear options for satisfying the library research proficiency, either offering 1 credit hour. (2) the proficiency will be satisfied early in the student's career. (3) students will not be allowed to declare majors early. These changes should have no impact on the library's staffing needs. F. Rationale 1. The small number of library faculty is unable to offer enough sections of the course Bibliography 101 to meet student demand. 2. Students presently have a preference for Bibliography 101, rather than the competency exam, as the means to satisfy the library proficiency. Study of text materials and often other preparation are necessary to pass the competency exam, yet students receive no academic credit. 3. The result is that large numbers of students, turned away from closed sections of Bibliography 101 each semester, defer completion of the proficiency requirement until forced to take the competency exam in their senior year. 4. By strengthening the competency exam, providing common text and learning materials for students in both tracks and by changes in the competency recommended herein (a. requiring students to register for Library Research 102, b. providing a 1 semester hour of credit and c. by requiring satisfaction of the proficiency during the student's first year at UNCA), the library proficiency will fulfill its intended academic purposes.
