    APC DOCUMENT #13:  Changes in Middle School Certification


EFFECTIVE DATE:     For catalog, Fall 1992; for implementation,
                    Spring 1992 (retroactive to Fall 1991)

DELETE:   (on page 95) the following:

               Title:  "Certification Program in Middle School
               Certification (Grades 6 through 12)

               The first sentence in the paragraph immediately 
               after the above title 

               Paragraph l, line 6:  "....for the second area of
               certification.  In addition....met"

               Sections I and II

               Last paragraph

REPLACE:  replace the deleted title with the following: 

          Certification Program for Middle School (Grades 6
          through 9)


ADD:      at the beginning of Paragraph l, line l the following
          sentence:

          All students must complete a major in an appropriate
          academic discipline and refer to catalog requirements
          outlined by the major department.

REPLACE:  the deleted text in Section I with the following:

          Required Courses in Education -- 24-30 hours, including
          310, 300, 320, 392, 455, 492.  Language Arts and Social
          Studies students must also take 313, 330, and 380.
          Science students must also take 382 and math students
          383.


REPLACE:  the deleted text in Section II with the following:

          Required courses outside Education -- 10-13 hours, 
          including PSYC 100 and 217.  In addition, Language Arts
          and Social Studies students must take PSYC 220;
          Mathematics students, PSYC 316; and Science students,
          PSYC 316 and SOC 240.  Recommended elective for other
          than science students:  SOC 240.

ADD:      the following:

          IV.  Other departmental requirements/recommendations -- 
               Those standard requirements as outlined on pages
               [93] and [94] of this catalog must be met.  In
               addition, completion of a second area of
               concentration or an endorsement in reading is
               recommended.



IMPACT:        No impact is expected.  See Rationale.

RATIONALE:     These changes would

               a)   provide for greater clarity relative to
                    certification requirements;

               b)   correct a catalog error with respect to EDUC
                    332 which was replaced in Fall 1989 by EDUC
                    320;

               c)   remove the unnecessary requirement of EDUC
                    330 for science and mathematics students;

               d)   reflect the requirement of SOC 240 for
                    science students, a requirement which not
                    only satisfied the NCATE and SDPI demands for
                    a multicultural emphasis but has been in
                    effect from the time of first inclusion of
                    SOC 240 into the UNCA curriculum.  Thus, no
                    change in effect upon the Sociology
                    Department is expected.
