THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 1192S Date of Senate Approval 3/5/92 Signature of Senate Chair __________________________ Date________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval _______________________________ Date________________ Denied _______________________________ Date________________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC DOCUMENT #10: "Changes in Management" All changes effective 1992-1993 Catalog 1. ADD: on page 133, the following course; "305 Management of International Business(3) identifies, explains, and analyzes those factors involved in the management of a multinational corporation, with special emphasis on the differences between U.S. and foreign organizations in the cultural, managerial, economic, and legal/political areas. Prerequisite: MGMT 200 or permission of the instructor." Impact: This is an international course which would be appropriate for students interested in an International Studies minor, an international emphasis in the General Management Track, or an elective course with international content. Chairs of Economics, Political Science, and Sociology Departments were consulted, are receptive and see no adverse impact. Rationale: Internationalization of the Management Department's curriculum has been assigned a high priority. This course along with MGMT 450, International Marketing, is a step toward meeting that goal. 2. DELETE: on page 135, under the course heading "490 Professional and Technical Internship (6)" third line, "grade point average overall and in the major of "2.0" is required to enroll in the course." REPLACE with: grade point average overall or in the major department of "2.5" is required to enroll in the course. Impact: More management students will be required to elect the two additional course and competency exam option. This will decrease the number of students electing an internship by approximately 15-20% and will increase the numbers for listed classes. This will not impact other departments. Rationale: To obtain quality internships the Management Department has the responsibility to place good students with local industry and business. Marginal students who do not perform to either the host organization or the faculty advisor's expectations only tarnish the university's reputation. Those students who do not maintain the minimum GPA are better served with the additional course-work option. 3. ADD: on page 132, the following course; 323 Long Term Care Administration(3) Introduces students to the administration of various residential and nursing facilities which provide services to elderly clientele. Topics covered include the evolution of long-term care policy, state and federal regulations, the psychosocial model of care and managing the effects of institutional living. Impact: Course has been taught as a special topics course for three semesters. Will not impact other departments. Rationale: This course will provide Health Care students with an elective in an area in which there is growing interest. 4. DELETE: on page 129, under the heading, Certificate in Health Care Administration:, third, fourth, and fifth line, "complete the following courses with a C or better: MGMT 200, 313, 320; CSCI 126; ACCT 216; and MCOM 269. Please contact the Management Department for further information." REPLACE with complete the following courses with a C or better: MGMT 200, 320, 322, 421, and 6 additional hours. The 6 additional hours will provide individualized program focus and must be approved by the academic advisor. Three of these 6 hours must be 300 level or above. Impact: Eliminating CSCI 126, ACCT 216, and MCOM 269 from the Certificate requirements will have minimal impact on other departments -- a reduction in enrollment of approximately one student per class this semester. Rationale: This change will allow more flexibility in meeting the Certificate requirements. A student may focus on health care related courses rather than general management related courses. Allowing students to choose 6 hours of electives will make it possible for students to concentrate on an area that will best suit their career interests. 5. CHANGES IN COURSE NUMBERS: change: "Management Information Systems (3)" from 301 to 383 change: "Human Performance and Work Design (3)" from 315 to 384 DELETE: (on page 131), under General Requirements for Industrial and Engineering Management, second line, "I. Required courses in the major - 30 hours as follows: MGMT 200, 315, 350, 381, 390, 394". REPLACE with I. Required courses in the major - 30 hours as follows: MGMT 200, 350, 381, 384, 390, 394. DELETE: on the same page and heading on the eighth line, "following two groups - Group I: CSCI 444; MGMT 301, 382, 485; Group II: MCOM 269;". REPLACE with: following two groups - Group I: CSCI 444; MGMT 382, 383, 485; Group II: MCOM 269; Impact: These changes will not impact other departments. Rationale: This change will allow a more logical catalog listing for both industrial and engineering management and international courses.
