THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 0391F Date of Senate Approval 12/12/91 Signature of Senate Chair __________________________ Date________ Action of Vice Chancellor: Approval _______________________________ Date________________ Denied _______________________________ Date________________ Reasons for denial and suggested modifications: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC DOCUMENT #2: "Changes in Political Science" Change 1. Effective Date: 1992-1993 Catalog Add: on page 161, under the heading "Program in Political Economy", section I, second line, the course number "323" after the course number "321". The clause will then read "..., and one course from 321, 323, or 326;..." the same identical change is to be made in the very last line of page 89. Approval of the Economics Department is attached. Impact: The change will increase the elective options available to students majoring in Political Economy. There will be no change in the frequency with which the courses are offered. Rationale: POLS 321 and 326 primarily address the supply of economic benefits. POLS 323 addresses the political demand for such goods. The addition offers a greater balance to the program. Change 2. Effective Date: 1992-1993 Catalog Add: on page 165, to the end of the course descriptions of POLS 392 and POLS 491, and on page 166 to the end of the description of POLS 492, the following... "(An IP grade may be awarded at the discretion of the instructor)". Impact: none foreseen. Students must still pass either 491 or 492 to satisfy the Demonstration of Competency Requirement. Over the last five years less than ten percent of the students enrolled in these classes would have been affected. Rationale: These are research courses where, on occasion, students are unable to complete projects within a specified time. This corresponds to the definition and intent of the IP grade. Change 3 Effective Date: 1992-1993 Catalog Delete: on page 163, the Course Title and description for Political Science 334. Replace With: "The Politics of Law" "A critical and comparative examination of law and legal institutions in their political contexts. Students are introduced to normative debates surrounding legal theory and practice." Impact: no impact on availability or staffing of the course. Rationale: The course, as currently listed, gives the impression of being more pragmatically pre-professional than it is or should be. The new description is more appropriate for a liberal arts curriculum and to the material it actually covers.
