Statement of Faculty Senate Action:   


                          Resolution #1



WHEREAS:  The University of North Carolina at Asheville has
received a gift of $125,000 from President C.D. Spangler; and,

WHEREAS:  His beneficence is identical in amount to similar gifts
given by him to all campuses in the University system on this
occasion; and,

WHEREAS:  The gift was unsolicited and received in a time of
fiscal stringency in North Carolina; and,

WHEREAS:  The impact of the donation at UNCA will be greater here
than on larger campuses within the system;

THEREFORE:  It is most fitting that the Faculty Senate chair
convey to President Spangler the following Senate action:




The Faculty Senate, on behalf of the faculty at the University of
North Carolina at Asheville, has formally resolved to extend its
heartfelt appreciation to President C.D. Spangler for his 
generous, unexpected, and unrestricted gift of $125,000 to this
institution.  Once placed into an endowment, it will be spent in
the cause of faculty and instructional development, thereby
giving us numerous yearly reminders of the vision and confidence
that the University President invests in the enterprise that he
leads.  We cherish the gift and hail the educational
statesmanship of its provider.
