THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 3591S Date of Senate Approval 3/28/91 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #32: Changes in Music Curriculum SUMMARY The proposed changes will have no effect on the total number of hours required in the major or cognate courses. These changes will not require additional faculty positions beyond the currently appropriated total of four full-time positions. The total number of required adjuncts will probably decrease, due to the proposed change in Applied Music requirements for the B.S. track. No additional equipment or other physical resources will be required. 1. a) Effective Date: Fall semester, 1991. 1. b) Delete: NA 1. c) Add: 293, 294 Keyboard Harmony and Improvisation I, II (2,2) Harmonization, voicing, and improvisation in various musical styles including: classical, folk, jazz, pop, and rock. Prerequisite for 293: MUSC 131 or equivalent and 102 or equivalent. Prerequisite for 294: MUSC 293. 1. d) Environmental Impact Statement: This is a more economical approach to Applied Music instruction in that it is a class approach as opposed to completely individualized instruction. The class will be taught in the department's Keyboard Lab thus making even greater use of an existing lab. 1. e) Rationale: Replaces the current Applied Music requirement (first two semesters) for those students enrolled in the Music with Recording Arts (B.S.) program. This is intended as a more relevant and valuable applied music experience for students who intend to work in various music technology-related careers. 2. a) Effective Date: Fall semester, 1991. 2. b) Delete: NA 2. c) Add: 125 Jazz Choir (1) Jazz vocal choir rehearsing and publicly performing contemporary jazz arrangements. Degree Requirements (128 hours) 16. c) Add: page 141 B.S. Degree Requirements (120 hours) 16. d) Environmental Impact Statement: NA 16. e) Rationale: Apparently, the 128-hour requirement was established because the APC and Senate felt that the total number of required hours in the major plus cognate would reduce the total number of free electives required of the student enrolled in this degree track. However, the cognate hours in mathematics and physics satisfy the general education requirements in those areas, thereby affording the student sufficient opportunity to enroll in elective courses. 17. a) Effective Date: Fall semester, 1991. 17. b) Delete: (Page 141, item I under B.S Degree Requirements) Required courses in the major - 40 hours, including 201, 202, 231, 232, 301, 302, 331, 332, 351, 352, 353, 380 and 381; eight hours in Applied Music, four of which must be at the 300 or 400 level; four hours of approved ensemble. 17. c) Add: Required courses in the major - 40 hours, including MUSC 201, 202, 231, 232, 293, 294, 301, 302, 331, 332, 351, 352, 353, 384, 385, 386, 387, 484, 485, 486, 487; two hours of approved ensemble. 17. d) Environmental Impact Statement: NA 17. e) Rationale: Changes will bring our curriculum in line with other university programs in music recording, such as New York University, which just received reaccreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music--the association we will be applying to for accreditation. 18. a) Effective Date: Fall semester, 1991. 18. b) Delete: (Page 141, item II under B.S. Degree Requirements) Required courses outside the major - 24 hours: MATH 163, 164; PHYS 102, 131, 231, 240; SCI 210; a computer science elective approved by the advisor. 18. c) Add: Required courses outside the major - 24 hours: MATH 163 (fulfills G.E. mathematics requirement), 164; PHYS 102, 131, 231 (these three physics courses fulfill the G.E. science requirement); PHYS 310; CSCI 201. 18. d) Environmental Impact Statement: NA 18. e) Rationale: See 17-e. 19. a) Effective Date: Fall semester, 1991. 19. b) Delete: (Page 141, item III under B.S. Prerequisite: MUSC 336 or permission of instructor (Optional practicum, MUSC 339, available). 26. d) Environmental Impact Statement: See 27-d. 26. e) Rationale: See 27-e. 27. a) Effective Date: Fall semester, 1991. 27. b) Delete: NA 27. c) Add: 339 Electronic Music Practicum II (1) Continuation of MUSC 337. Prerequisite: MUSC 337. Corequisite: MUSC 338. 27. d) Environmental Impact Statement: 336 - 339 will meet in Lipinsky 011. No additional space is required. 27. e) Rationale: MUSC 336/338 and 337/339 are seen as an alternate to Applied Music courses, for some upperclasspersons. The goals of traditional Applied Music courses, technical performance proficiency on a specific instrument, may not be relevant to students who wish to work in the electronic music medium. MUSC 337 will give students an opportunity to pursue independent music research/production projects in the electronic music medium, while 336 will provide the background and discipline that will connect the students with the rapidly- evolving fields of electronic and computer music production. A student will be able to enroll in 336 only (and not 337), if s/he wishes to approach electronic music as a field of academic study rather than a medium for experimentation and music production. However, a student will not be able to enroll in 337 without also participating in 336. 28. a) Effective Date: Fall semester, 1991. 28. b) Delete: (Page 143, sixth course entry) 361 Jazz Improvisation (3) Discussion, illustration, and performance of improvised solos in various jazz styles; study of scale, mode, chord construction, and digital patterns: discussion of various approaches to solo building. Prerequisites: MUSC 192 or equivalent, MUSC 201, 231, and permission of instructor. 28. d) Environmental Impact Statement: We offered a two semester sequence in jazz theory and improvisation last year utilizing adjunct faculty; a full-time faculty member taught jazz improvisation before that. We do not expect to need additional faculty positions to service this course beyond the four full- time faculty positions (supplemented by our current roster of adjuncts) we presently employ. No additional equipment or facilities will be required. 28. e) Rationale: The music department needs to offer this revised and expanded sequence in jazz theory and improvisation in order to attract more musically skilled and talented students to our program. These changes were decided upon after consultation with known experts in the area of jazz education. 29. a) Effective Date: Fall semester, 1991. 29. b) Delete: NA 29. c) Add: 365 Jazz Theory and Improvisation II (3) The theory and performance of altered patterns; tetrachord and symmetrical combinations; chord extension, addition and substitution; addition or substitution of nondiatonic scales within a key; analysis of solos; beat placement.
