ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: Although there are several new courses added to the program, all have been taught for several years as special topics courses. EDUC l00, l0l, 200, 20l, 30l, and 302 are teaching fellows seminars, required by the NC Public School forum. Students take one of these courses per semester and may take them for UNCA Honor's Credit. These courses impact on no other program and are required only for teaching fellows. They have been taught for several years by the members of the Education Department. EDUC 385 has been taught as a special topics course for three years and is required by the state for certification of K-l2 foreign language teachers. It is taught by Norhma Holton of the foreign language department. She was hired, in part, to work with the Education Department to teach the foreign language methods course. EDUC 390 and 392 are a division of EDUC 490 and 492 which have been reduced to 2 s.h. This was done to assist the student teachers in completing the major work of the senior research projects prior to student teaching. These courses are taught by the faculty of the Education Department and impact on no other program. PSYC 220 has been taught as a special topics course (PSYC 374) for three years. For most teacher education students its redesign combines PSYC 220 and 3l6 (see attached catalog description). This was done to meet the l28-hour cap imposed by UNC General Administration. The elimination of EDUC 342 from the K-6 program was approved by APC last year, but was not corrected in the current catalog. SOC 240 was added last year to meet the multi-cultural competency requirements of NCSDPI. However, due to the large increase in numbers of education students, the Sociology Department cannot handle the students in the class. Therefore, we will continue to strongly suggest the course to students to fulfill general education requirements. However, we will not require it. Instead, we have revised courses within the Education department to meet the multi-cultural requirement. The change on page 99, (D) is an editorial change. RATIONALE: Most of the changes are editorial. Therefore, this rationale will address the three substantive changes. l. Education l00 through Education 302 are six one-hour seminars primarily for the Teaching Fellows. They are required for no other programs. These courses are designed to give the teaching fellows a broad educational perspective focusing on humanistic and moral aspects of teaching. They are designed to meet the goals of the UNCA Teaching Fellows Program as approved by the NC Teaching Fellows Commission. Inclusion of these seminars in the program has a great deal to do with UNCA's "commendable" rating from the NC Teaching Fellows Commission. UNCA is one of three campuses (out of l3) to receive the highest rating of the Commission. The second semester seminar each year allows the students to apply information from the previous semester in the public schools. Education l00 and l0l are open ONLY to teaching fellows. This is to develop esprit de corps and allow these freshmen fellows to deal with issues related to the Teaching Fellows Program. Subsequent courses are available to all UNCA students with permission of the instructor. 2. PSYC 220 has been redesigned to include aspects of PSYC 3l6 which is no longer required. This has been done to meet UNC-General Administration's l28 graduation cap. The instructor in the PSCY Department has worked with the Education Department in the redesign of this course. The redesigned course meets the competencies required by the state and the goals of the Education Department. 3. EDUC 490 and 492 have been divided into two courses (EDUC 390 and 490, EDUC 392 and 492). This division allows students to take a one-hour research methods course the semester prior to student teaching and complete a 2 s.h. school-based research project during student teaching. This was done for several reasons: a. to provide students with research methodologies prior to the student teaching semester, b. to reinforce some of the content taught in PSYC 220, c. to more equitably distribute faculty load as per Dr. Wilson's request (prior to this change faculty received l s.h. teaching credit for each research student).
