THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2391S Date of Senate Approval 3/21/91 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document #23: Proposed catalog changes for Atmospheric Sciences Effective Date: Fall Semester, 1991 1. Change: the course number of Introduction to Meteorology (3) from 105 to 103 on pp. 51, and 72 through 74 of the 1990 - 1991 catalog. Add: to the course description on p 73; "This course can be used to satisfy the 3 semester hours interdisciplinary natural sciences general education requirement." Rationale: the number change reflects the fact that the course is 3 semester hours. The earlier 105 label precipitated some confusion in view of the otherwise uniform label for the current 5 semester hours natural sciences courses offered by other departments. Environmental Impact Statement: None. 2. Add: "455" to Section I (major requirements) of both tracks on p 72 of the 1990 - 1991 catalog. Also change in the same paragraphs, "six additional hours at 300 level or above." to "three additional hours at 300 level or above." Rationale: ATMS 455 is Physical Meteorology. In October 1992, the Federal Government is adding this to the list of required courses necessary to meet criteria to be hired as a meteorologist. The change in the number of additional elective hours is to meet the requirement listed on page 47 which states, "A major field of concentration normally consists of not more than 36 semester hours..." The addition of ATMS 455 (see item 3. below) forces this adjustment. Environmental Impact Statement: The course is already listed in the catalog, but thus far only as an elective. It has never been taught due to staffing limitations; however even without the Federal requirement it was to have been offered biennially starting in fall 1991. Therefore, no impact is anticipated.
